Audit fictional arousal-linked signal changes without practising biofeedback
This is a static research-lens exercise, not an autonomic-regulation guide. It supplies every fictional signal and threshold needed to classify four records. Do not change breathing, stare at a display, induce arousal, use a wearable, seek a lower heart-related value or treat the rows as personal targets. Respiratory pattern, pupil diameter, heart-rate variability, subjective arousal and task accuracy are non-equivalent. Several may move together, separately or in opposite directions. A configured short-term pattern does not prove emotion, safety, judgment, treatment effect, unique superiority, retention or durable real-world control. No practical biofeedback or regulation method is authorised here.

Authority and safety
- Governance ceiling: explanation and static fictional record analysis only. Capability self-practice, live administration, protocol delivery and efficacy claims are not authorised until the recorded next_gate adjudication changes.
- Use only the four supplied fictional signal records. Do not change breathing, induce arousal, use a sensor or feedback display, or attempt grounding as part of this lesson.
- The rows cannot diagnose emotion, anxiety, autonomic state, treatment response, safety or judgment.
Exact materials
- The four fictional records A–D in the fixture; no sensor, breathing exercise, biofeedback device or personal measurement is used.
- Threshold card: flag respiratory change only when breaths per minute fall by at least 2; pupil change only when diameter falls by at least 0.3 mm; RMSSD change only when it rises by at least 5 ms; subjective change only when arousal falls by at least 2 points; task is preserved when accuracy falls by no more than 2 percentage points.
- Change worksheet with columns for respiratory difference, pupil difference, RMSSD difference, subjective difference, accuracy-point difference, four signal flags, task-preserved flag and bounded interpretation.
- Authority card: THIS SUPPLEMENT USES STATIC FICTIONAL DATA ONLY; no breathing pace, feedback method, dose, progression, diagnosis, anxiety treatment or safety decision.
- Calculator, optional, and the hidden answer key.
Set up in this order
- Copy the five threshold rules exactly, including units and the word at least. A 0.2 mm pupil decrease does not meet the 0.3 mm flag.
- For every arrow, calculate post minus pre. Keep negative and positive signs before applying a threshold.
- Award signal flags separately; never add respiratory, pupil, RMSSD and self-report values into one calmness score.
- Calculate task accuracy change in percentage points, not percent. Mark preserved only when the drop is 2 points or less.
- Use the condition column to distinguish same-session feedback, same-session no-feedback comparison and a separate 48-hour replication row. Do not call the last row retention because identity, acquisition and matched configuration continuity are not supplied.
- Finish each record with a narrow evidence statement and at least one claim it cannot support.
Supplied fixture
| Case | Condition | Respiration pre to post | Pupil diameter pre to post | RMSSD pre to post | Subjective arousal pre to post | Task accuracy pre to post |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | Same-session apparatus feedback | 18 to 12 breaths/min | 4.8 to 4.1 mm | 24 to 36 ms | 7 to 5 out of 10 | 88% to 90% |
| B | Same-session apparatus feedback | 16 to 11 breaths/min | 4.5 to 4.6 mm | 30 to 31 ms | 6 to 6 out of 10 | 92% to 84% |
| C | Same-session no-feedback comparison | 17 to 14 breaths/min | 4.6 to 4.3 mm | 26 to 35 ms | 7 to 4 out of 10 | 86% to 89% |
| D | Separate 48-hour no-feedback replication row; participant identity and acquisition continuity are not supplied | 18 to 13 breaths/min | 4.9 to 4.2 mm | 23 to 34 ms | 8 to 5 out of 10 | 90% to 91% |

Scoring rule
For each case award 1 point for each of five signed changes, 1 for the correct number of signal flags, 1 for the task-preserved decision and 1 for a condition-appropriate bounded conclusion: 8 per case, 32 total. Passing requires B classified as one signal flag with task not preserved, C used to block unique-superiority claims and D labelled a separate delayed replication rather than retention. Any breathing instruction, feedback dose, self-measurement, diagnosis or treatment claim receives STOP.
Worked example
- For B, calculate respiration: 11 - 16 = -5 breaths/min, which meets the at-least-2 decrease threshold.
- Calculate pupil change: 4.6 - 4.5 = +0.1 mm. It increased, so the decrease threshold fails.
- Calculate RMSSD: 31 - 30 = +1 ms, below the required +5 ms; subjective change is 6 - 6 = 0, below the required 2-point decrease.
- Calculate task change: 84 - 92 = -8 percentage points, which is worse than the allowed 2-point drop.
- Count one of four signal flags and mark task NOT PRESERVED.
Correct result: B earns 8/8 only when reported as an isolated respiratory-threshold change with non-preserved task performance. It does not demonstrate broad autonomic downregulation, emotional recovery, treatment benefit or safe judgment.
Right and wrong
| Moment | Right / safer | Wrong / riskier | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading B | Report one respiratory flag and an 8-point accuracy loss. | Call the row calm because breathing slowed. | Other declared signals did not meet thresholds and task performance worsened. |
| Comparing A and C | Note that both meet the fictional pattern despite different feedback conditions. | Use A alone to claim feedback is uniquely effective. | The no-feedback comparison blocks that conclusion in this dataset. |
| Reading D | Describe a narrow 48-hour no-feedback retest pattern in the same fictional fixture. | Claim durable everyday emotional mastery. | One configured delayed record is not broad or real-world transfer. |
| Handling signals | Keep respiration, pupil, RMSSD, self-report and accuracy in separate columns. | Add unlike units into one autonomic score. | The signals are related but non-equivalent. |
| Using the pack | Classify supplied numbers without changing any bodily signal. | Try to reproduce Case A by controlling breathing or using a wearable. | Guide and protocol permission are not ready. |
Common mistakes and fixes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Any numerical movement is counted, even when it misses the predeclared threshold. | Apply the exact threshold card; B's +1 ms RMSSD change does not earn a flag. |
| Accuracy change is reported as a relative percentage. | Subtract percentage values directly and label the result percentage points. |
| Four signal flags are called proof of one emotion. | Report the signal pattern and preserve the emotional-state non-claim. |
| The delayed D record is mixed with same-session A and C. | Label acquisition, comparator and retention questions separately. |
| The fictional thresholds are turned into personal targets. | Keep the worksheet static and use no sensor, breathing manipulation or self-experiment. |
Evidence boundary
What the tutorial may—and may not—claim.
Supportable claim
Some adults can learn short-term downregulation of declared arousal-linked signals with feedback.
Measurement boundary
Pupil diameter, respiratory pattern, HRV and subjective arousal are related but non-equivalent signals; none alone establishes emotional state or clinical recovery.
Become unshakably calm
MetricDeclared physiological recovery time plus calibrated task performance under stress
BoundaryA lower signal does not prove safety, judgment or mental-health treatment.
Negative and limiting findings
- No unique superiority over mindfulness or physical activity was shown in one comparative trial.
- Durable emotional and real-world transfer remains unestablished.
Prohibited wording
- switch off stress on command
- control adrenaline at will
- biofeedback cures anxiety
- calmness proves safety or competence
