Appendix K: Accelerated Learning & Cognitive Enhancement
Accelerated Learning
EVIDENCE-INFORMED LEARNING PRACTICES
Evidence boundary: retrieval practice and distributed practice can improve retention of defined material in many studied settings. Effects vary with material, learner, feedback, interval and test, and no technique is best for every task.
Near transfer must be tested; these methods do not establish higher intelligence, general learning speed or professional competence.
Teaching or explaining can reveal gaps, but is not universally superior to studying alone. Sleep and physical activity are health variables, not guaranteed learning enhancers in this appendix.
ACTIVE RETRIEVAL OPTION
Instead of relying only on rereading, close or hide the source and attempt to reconstruct the defined information.
Procedure: study or practise for a feasible interval; retrieve without the source; compare with an answer key or qualified feedback; record errors; and review only what remains relevant.
Possible formats include flash cards, blank-page recall, practice questions, worked examples or teach-back.
Difficulty is not proof of learning. The task should be challenging enough to reveal errors without creating avoidable distress or overload.
SPACED REVIEW OPTION
A scheduling tool may increase intervals after successful retrieval and shorten them after errors, but no fixed one-two-four-eight-day algorithm is universally optimal.
- Software queues are suggestions, not obligations. Review only useful items at a sustainable cadence and retire cards that do not earn their burden.
- Card design: test one bounded question where possible; include sufficient context; permit images, examples or alternative accessible formats; and avoid oversimplifying concepts that require explanation.
- Use a recall criterion appropriate to the material and purpose. No universal retention percentage or daily review rule applies. (R7-S04)
- If performance is poor, possible causes include unclear cards, insufficient prerequisite knowledge, unsuitable intervals, fatigue or a mismatched test. Investigate rather than assuming the learner failed.
- If performance is very high, the material may be well learned, easy, over-rehearsed or insufficiently representative; no one interpretation is automatic.
Retrieval effort can be useful, but difficulty is not proof that learning is effective. Score delayed recall and transfer rather than struggle.
Illustrative scheduling logic:
• New material may be reviewed after a delay suited to the material and goal.
• Correct recall may justify a longer interval, but no fixed doubling sequence applies.
• An error should inform the next review; resetting to the beginning is optional.
• Software estimates a schedule; it does not know an individually optimal interval.
- Use any accessible flashcard, question or retrieval system; no app is required.
- Organise material only to the degree useful for the declared aim.
- Create prompts that test the intended knowledge or skill.
- Review at a cadence that earns its burden; daily use is optional.
Prompt-design considerations:
• One decision-relevant unit per prompt may simplify scoring, but complex questions can be appropriate.
• The prompt should have a scorable answer or rubric appropriate to the task.
• Use images, audio, text or tactile cues only when they support the target and access needs.
• Connect to prior knowledge when helpful and accurate.
• Keep the prompt no more complex than the intended assessment requires.
Practice review:
• Do not let a software queue define an obligation. Review only useful prompts at a sustainable cadence.
• Add only the number of new prompts that can be reviewed without displacing sleep, work, care or understanding.
THE FEYNMAN TECHNIQUE
Purpose: Deep understanding through simplification.
Process:
- Choose a concept
- Explain it as if teaching a child
- Identify gaps in your explanation
- Go back to source material
- Simplify further
Rules:
• No jargon
• Use analogies
• If you can’t explain simply, you don’t understand deeply
• Keep simplifying until crystal clear
Example:
Topic: Compound Interest
Jargon version: “Compound interest is the addition of interest to the principal sum, with subsequent interest calculations made on the growing total.”
Feynman version: “Imagine you have $100 and earn 10% interest. After year one, you have $110. The next year, you earn 10% on $110, not just the original $100. So you get $11 instead of $10. Your interest earns interest. Over time, this snowballs dramatically.”
INTERLEAVED PRACTICE
Instead of: Block practice (AAABBBCCC)
Do this: Interleaved practice (ABCBACBCA)
Why It Works:
• Forces discrimination between concepts
• Mimics real-world application
• Strengthens retrieval pathways
• Feels harder but works better
Application:
• Math: Mix problem types in practice
• Languages: Mix grammar topics
• Music: Mix pieces instead of repeating one
• Sports: Vary drills randomly
The Key Insight:
If practice feels easy, you’re probably not learning optimally. Struggling and failing (then correcting) is the signal of effective learning.
ELABORATIVE INTERROGATION
Ask “Why?” and “How?” constantly.
Instead of: Accepting facts passively
Do this: Question everything
Example:
Fact: “The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.”
Elaboration: “Why do cells need power? How does the mitochondria produce this power? What happens if mitochondria fail?”
Practice:
• After reading a fact, ask why it’s true
• Connect new information to existing knowledge
• Generate your own examples
• Make analogies
DUAL CODING
Use both words and images.
Why:
• Visual and verbal memory systems are separate
• Using both creates redundant encoding
• Images are remembered better than words alone
How:
• Draw diagrams while studying
• Create mind maps
• Use visual flashcards
• Sketch concepts, even badly
• Watch videos AND read
THE POMODORO TECHNIQUE FOR LEARNING
Structure:
• 25 minutes focused study
• 5 minute break
• Repeat 4 times
• 15-30 minute longer break
During 25 minutes:
• No distractions
• No phone
• Single task
• Active learning methods
During 5-minute break:
• Physical movement
• Look away from screens
• Don’t start new tasks
Possible functions to test:
• A work/break cue may reduce initiation effort for some tasks.
• It does not prevent burnout.
• Repeated blocks do not automatically build focus stamina.
• The timer can create review points if those points are useful.
ILLUSTRATIVE LEARNING SCHEDULE — NO OPTIMAL TIMETABLE
Daily timing examples are optional and depend on alertness, work, care, disability and task.
• Put difficult material at any time that produces acceptable task quality; morning is not universally peak alertness.
• Practice and application can occur whenever feasible.
• Evening review is optional.
• Studying before bed is not required and should not displace sleep or worsen arousal.
Weekly schedules are optional:
• No weekday is assigned to new material.
• No Tuesday–Thursday deep-practice block is required.
• Review and testing occur at the interval appropriate to the material.
• Catch-up is optional and should not become debt.
Illustrative sequence for one bounded subject:
Stage 1: survey the task and criteria; no one-hour dose applies.
Stage 2: practise and retrieve at a tolerable dose; no two-to-five-hour band applies.
Stage 3: apply where relevant; no cumulative-hour gate applies.
Stage 4: test retention and transfer rather than assuming integration.
Stage 5: refine or stop according to evidence; twenty hours does not establish mastery.
MEMORY PALACE: STEP-BY-STEP
Creating Your Palace:
Step 1: Choose a Familiar Location
• Your home

Step 2: Identify Stations (10-20)
Walk through the location and note distinct spots:
- Front door
- Entryway
- Living room couch
- TV
- Kitchen sink
- Refrigerator
- Dining table
- Stairs

Step 3: Practice the Route
• Walk it mentally several times
• Use a stable route while learning, but change or adapt it when transfer is being tested.
• Stations should be vivid and distinct
Step 4: Place Items
To memorize a list, place vivid images at each station.
Example: Memorizing a grocery list
- Front door: Giant milk carton blocking entrance
- Entryway: Eggs splattered on floor (careful!)
- Couch: Loaf of bread sitting like a guest
- TV: Made entirely of cheese
- Sink: Apples overflowing

• Make images bizarre, funny, or emotional
• Make them interact with the location
• Use action and movement
• Engage multiple senses
Step 5: Retrieval
• Move through the palace mentally in your strongest imagination mode
• Register each image at each station — see it, describe it, feel its position, or attach a sound or word
• Translate image back to item
With Practice:
• You can store 50-100+ items easily
• Create multiple palaces
• Link palaces together for massive storage
• Ancient orators used this for hours-long speeches
Cognitive Enhancement Detail
Comprehensive protocols for enhancing cognitive performance across multiple domains.
MEMORY ENHANCEMENT
The Memory Palace (Method of Loci): An ancient technique used by memory champions to recall vast amounts of information.
How It Works: 1. Choose a familiar location (your home, a route you walk daily) 2. Identify specific spots along the route (front door, couch, kitchen sink, etc.) 3. Mentally place items you want to remember at each spot using vivid, bizarre imagery 4. To recall, mentally walk through the location and “see” each item
Example: To remember a grocery list (milk, eggs, bread, apples): - Front door: Imagine milk flooding out when you open the door - Couch: Picture giant eggs sitting on the couch watching TV - Kitchen sink: Bread loaves clogging the sink, overflowing - Refrigerator: Apples with faces screaming when you open the fridge
Vivid or unusual imagery may help some people, while verbal, spatial, auditory, tactile or symbolic cues may work better for others. Emotional intensity is not required.
Example formation plan: choose a small number of stable locations, establish an answer-key baseline, expand only when accuracy remains reliable and test a changed route separately for transfer. No weekly card or location quota applies.
Advanced Technique - The PAO System (Person-Action-Object): For memorizing numbers, create a system: - Each 2-digit number (00-99) has an assigned Person, Action, and Object - To memorize a 6-digit number, combine PAO from three 2-digit pairs - Example: 27-85-04 might become “Einstein (27) juggling (85) elephants (04)”
A PAO system may support trained number-encoding tasks; speed, retention and transfer must be measured rather than assumed.
FOCUS AND ATTENTION ENHANCEMENT
Attention Training Protocol:
Phase 1 option: remove only avoidable distractions that materially impair the selected task. Preserve emergency access, disability supports, caregiving and role-required communication.
Phase 2 option: choose a feasible block, measure useful output and burden, and change duration only when the evidence supports it. Titan sets no three-to-six-week or multi-hour attention progression.
During a block, use the level of single-tasking and communication control that fits the role. Record distraction without moral judgement, take breaks as needed and stop when quality or safety deteriorates.
Phase 3 option: increase task difficulty only after a stable baseline and track output quality and burden. A brief settling practice before the block is optional; meditation is not assumed to improve focus and can be omitted. (R7D-S07)
No mastery phase or daily three-hour target applies. Longer blocks do not prove superior output or sustainability; retain the smallest schedule that meets the declared criterion.
TASK-SPECIFIC SPEED AND FLUENCY
Task-specific fluency may improve with practice; general processing speed and far transfer are not assumed.
Training Methods:
- Comprehension-Controlled Reading Practice
- Establish baseline reading time and delayed comprehension on material of declared difficulty.
- Use a pointer only if it improves pacing without reducing comprehension.
- Change pace modestly, then test the same predeclared comprehension rule.
- Practise briefly and compare like with like; familiarity with easier material is not transfer.
- Report speed only beside comprehension. Titan excludes claims of universally faster reading with unchanged understanding.
- Rapid Mental Math
- Apps: Elevate, Lumosity, Brilliant
- Practice duration: choose the smallest interval that produces useful task data; five to ten minutes is illustrative only.
- Start easy; progressively challenge
- Track improvement over time
- Reaction Training
- Online reaction time tests (Human Benchmark)
- Stroop tests
- Go/No-Go tasks
- Use a self-selected interval and stop when quality or comfort deteriorates; five to ten minutes daily is not a requirement.

Improvement on an app, Stroop task, reaction test, arithmetic set or timed routine is task-specific. Do not infer increased IQ, general processing speed or far transfer without a separate predeclared transfer test.
LEARNING ACCELERATION
Optimize how you acquire new knowledge and skills.
The Feynman Technique: 1. Choose a concept you want to learn 2. Explain it as if teaching a 12-year-old (no jargon) 3. Identify gaps in your explanation 4. Go back to source material to fill gaps 5. Simplify and refine explanation 6. Repeat until explanation is clear and complete
If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it deeply.
Interleaved Practice: Instead of practicing one thing repeatedly (blocked practice), mix different topics or skills within a study session: - Blocked: AAAA, BBBB, CCCC - Interleaved: ABC, BAC, CAB, ACB
Interleaving feels harder but produces better long-term retention and transfer.
Active Recall: After reading/learning, close the book and write down everything you remember. - This retrieval effort strengthens memory more than re-reading - Do this immediately after learning and at spaced intervals - Use flashcards (Anki) to automate spaced active recall
Sleep After Learning: Sleep consolidates memories. For important learning: - Study in evening (not immediately before bed—wind down first) - Get full night’s sleep - Avoid alcohol (disrupts memory consolidation) - Morning review the next day
CREATIVITY ENHANCEMENT
Creativity can be cultivated through specific practices.
Divergent-thinking drill: generate multiple possible uses or solutions before judging them, then evaluate novelty and usefulness separately. “One hundred uses,” daily practice and the claim that bad ideas cause good ones are not required.
Input Management: Creativity is recombination. Feed your brain diverse inputs: - Read outside your field - Consume art, music, and culture - Expose yourself to different perspectives - Travel (physically or mentally through books/documentaries)
Incubation: Allow unconscious processing time: - Work on problem, then take a break (walk, shower, sleep) - Insights often emerge during unfocused states - Don’t force; trust the process
Constraint Design: Paradoxically, constraints enhance creativity: - Set limitations (time, resources, format) - Limitations force novel solutions - “How would I solve this with only X?”
EXECUTIVE FUNCTION ENHANCEMENT
Executive function = working memory + inhibition + cognitive flexibility
Working-memory training can improve performance on the trained or closely related tasks, but controlled meta-analytic evidence does not show convincing far transfer to intelligence or broad real-world cognitive skills. Use it only when the trained task itself is the goal, and test retention and transfer separately. (R7D-S05)
Inhibition practice: use a declared pause-before-action task, cue management or a consent-based implementation intention. Do not use cold, pain or deprivation as proof of self-control; demonstrate the specific behaviour directly.
Cognitive Flexibility Training: - Perspective-taking exercises (“How would X see this?”) - Switching tasks intentionally (different from distraction) - Learning new skills that require different thinking modes - Playing strategy games with changing rules
