Separate facts from interpretations and repair a fictional perspective model

Cognitive empathy is accurate perspective-taking without pretending to read a mind. This pack supplies a fictional meeting dialogue, fact-inference worksheet columns, a neutral question, and a correction. The learner keeps direct statements separate from guesses, generates an alternative explanation, reflects tentatively, and updates without requiring agreement.

Authority and safety

  • Use only the fictional exchange. Do not covertly test a real person, diagnose motives or neurotype, pressure disclosure, or analyse a sensitive conflict.
  • With a willing participant, consent, correction, access, refusal, and their own words take priority.
  • Understanding does not require agreement, compliance, disclosure, or surrender of either person's boundary.

Exact materials

  • The six-line dialogue below
  • The built-in fact, inference, and repair columns
  • The supplied classification and repaired-model key
  • Paper, audio, text, or another accessible method

Set up in this order

  1. Read L1–L3 and copy stated or observable content into fact fields. Attributed speech remains ‘Alex states…’, not independently verified fact.
  2. Place Sam's disengagement idea in inference, generate at least one connection/access alternative and record confidence from 0 to 100.
  3. Write one neutral clarification question that does not assume disengagement, then lock it before opening the staged key.
  4. Open the staged L4–L6 key, compare your question with L4, record Alex's correction, update inference confidence and rewrite the model without defending the first inference.
  5. Write the learner's own agreement, disagreement or preference in a separate field; understanding another perspective does not require agreement.

Supplied fixture

Opening dialogue only. Complete the fact/inference fields, alternative, confidence and neutral question before opening staged L4–L6.

Scoring rule

Award 1 each for four classifications (camera-off fact, attributed connection reason, chat preference and Sam's disengagement inference), 1 for a plausible alternative, 1 for the neutral question, 1 for tentative wording, 1 for incorporating Alex's correction, 1 for an evidence-linked confidence update and 1 for keeping the learner's own view separate: 10 total. No claim absent from the fixture is scored.

Worked example

  1. Record L1-L2 facts: camera off; Alex says connection froze; Alex requests chat to stay involved.
  2. Record disengagement from L3 as Sam's inference, not fact.
  3. Generate the compatible connection/access alternative and use L4's neutral question.
  4. Use L5-L6 to replace the first model with Alex's stated intent and preference.
  5. Keep any disagreement outside the perspective summary.

Correct result: Repaired model: Alex was trying to stay involved while managing a freezing connection and prefers chat for this meeting. Sam's disengagement inference is not supported after correction.

Evidence boundary

What the tutorial may—and may not—claim.

Supportable claim

Cognitive empathy can improve on selected tasks and professional behaviors when the target, language, context and assistance are declared.

Measurement boundary

Declare target self-report or ground truth, observer inference, language, culture, relationship, confidence, error, correction, assistance and recipient outcome; agreement is not access to a private mind.

Myth

Read anyone like an open book

Metric

Target-verified inference accuracy and correction in a declared interaction

Boundary

No task grants access to hidden thoughts or makes one culture’s signals universal.

Negative and limiting findings

  • Coded empathic style did not prove accurate or beneficial understanding.
  • A pre–post ethnocultural programme lacked randomization, delayed retention and migrant-reported outcomes.

Prohibited wording

  • know exactly what anyone feels
  • mind-reading
  • universal empathy score
  • train cultural empathy instantly
  • AI empathy detector

Read L1–L3 and copy stated or observable content into fact fields. Attributed speech remains ‘Alex states…’, not independently verified fact.

Why this step exists

“Read L1–L3 and copy stated or observable content into fact fields” creates the auditable value, condition or statement needed for the tutorial’s later comparison and conclusion.

Success check

A legible entry directly completes “Read L1–L3 and copy stated or observable content into fact fields” and records the requested condition, decision or boundary without adding a new claim.
