This lesson teaches the complete provider-led regenerative-stewardship method: establish land/water and knowledge authority, define ecological and social reference conditions, agree rightsholder-defined outcomes, examine history and burden, compare qualified options including no action, stage reversible work, monitor direct and displaced effects, fund maintenance, publish accountability and stop or repair harm. Practice is a fictional desk pathway; no habitat work occurs.

Gather what you need and check the starting conditions

What you need

  • Qualified/rightsholder facilitator and fictional Merehaven wet-margin stewardship proposal.
  • Supplied fictional cards say the proposed wet margin crosses a parcel whose tenure is unresolved; the promoter supplies only a carbon estimate; local grazing history and community knowledge holders were not consulted; downstream drainage effects are unknown; and no landholder or rightsholder consent is recorded. A livelihood card says seasonal grazing access may be displaced. These facts deliberately require a stop, not a planting design.
  • Options, risk, staged-action, monitoring/spillover, maintenance, stop/repair and accountability templates.

Before you start

  • Confirm the place, rightsholders, species, tenure and proposal are entirely fictional.
  • Identify which real authorities and professionals would control every field action.
  • Set no-action and route-outward as valid results and prohibit any field visit.

3 · The method

Follow these steps in order

  1. Establish authority and tenure

    Map land/water holders, Indigenous/local knowledge governance, public jurisdiction, access, data and decision rights.

    Why: Stewardship cannot begin from ecological intention alone.

    Check: Every authority is present, missing or explicitly contested.

  2. Build reference conditions

    Record ecological and social baselines, seasonal variability, history, current uses, uncertainty and who defines desired condition.

    Why: Regeneration needs a reference and cannot erase contested history.

    Check: The baseline includes livelihoods and rights, not only species/carbon.

  3. Set rightsholder-defined outcomes

    Choose measurable ecological recovery, livelihood, authority, wellbeing and distribution outcomes with non-goals.

    Why: A single metric can hide displacement and injustice.

    Check: Outcomes and trade-offs are approved by the legitimate roles.

  4. Compare options and no action

    Review qualified alternatives, feasibility, evidence, reversibility, costs and who bears burden; retain no action.

    Why: Even a labelled restoration can displace access or redirect downstream water.

    Check: Rejected options and uncertainty remain visible.

  5. Map risk and spillover

    Identify direct, delayed and displaced effects across adjacent places, people and species, plus adverse-event triggers.

4 · Worked example

Scenario

A fictional proposal labels reed planting at Merehaven “regenerative” based on a carbon estimate, but tenure, local grazing history and drainage spillover are unresolved.

Walkthrough

  1. The facilitator maps fictional land, water, public and community authorities and marks Indigenous/local knowledge authority absent rather than assumed.
  2. Participants build ecological and livelihood reference conditions and find that carbon alone omits access, seasonal water and downstream effects.
  3. They compare no action, further hydrology assessment and a small reversible planting stage, then set spillover and livelihood stop triggers.
  4. Because tenure and rightsholder consent remain unresolved, the verdict is do not proceed and route outward; no planting plan is executed.

Result

The pathway correctly stops an under-authorised project despite a positive label. It does not establish ecological facts or approve real stewardship.
