2.22 KNOWLEDGE OPERATIONS & INTELLECTUAL LEVERAGE
You already have memory systems, learning protocols, and note tools from earlier sections. What most capable people lack is the pipeline — the operating system that turns information intake into original output instead of an ever-growing archive of things once read. Storage is not the product. Decisions, writing, designs, and judgment are.
The Pipeline
• Capture — one trusted inbox for everything worth keeping: ideas, passages, questions, observations. If capture is scattered, everything downstream starves.
• Clarify — at triage, write one line: what does this mean and why did it matter to me? An unclarified note is a stranger in six months.
• Organise by actionability, not topic: active projects first, then ongoing responsibilities, then reference, then archive. Filing by subject feels scholarly and retrieves nothing when it counts.
• Distil in layers — each time you revisit a note, compress: bold the core, then summarize the bolds, until the idea fits in a sentence you actually remember.
• Connect — link notes to the notes they argue with, extend, or contradict. Ideas compound at the joints, not in the piles.
• Retrieve at the point of need — the test of the whole system is whether starting any new project begins with a search of your own thinking first.
• Express — knowledge justifies itself by leaving the system: a decision made, a document written, a design shipped, a position defended. Express early and often; producing is also how you discover what you failed to understand.
• Maintain — quarterly, prune: delete the dead, archive the dormant, merge the duplicates. A knowledge system you do not trust, you do not use.
• Provenance — every claim worth keeping carries its source and your confidence in it, using section 4.8’s hygiene. A note that cannot say where it came from is a rumor with good formatting.
THE PRINCIPLE: Memory stores knowledge. Operations make it usable. The archive is not the asset — the throughput is.
