Classify fictional active, active-assisted, passive and unknown range records
This supplement is a no-movement route. It provides fictional diagrams in table form and already-recorded observations, so the learner does not need to stretch, load, bounce, hold, push or test pain. The task is to distinguish movement produced by the person from range created by outside assistance, then keep angle, support, comfort and meaningful function separate. No normative target is supplied, and more range is not assumed to be better. New pain, injury concern, unexplained limitation or rehabilitation decisions require an appropriately qualified clinician who knows the person’s context.

Authority and safety
- Use only the bounded configuration. Use a diagram, imagined example, or an ordinary movement already known to be comfortable and permitted. Do not add force, load, stretching or a new range challenge.
- Stop if the frame is being converted into stretching, loading, pain-testing or a self-assessment of injury.
- Stop if comparison with a normative body ideal creates pain, distress or pressure to attempt movement.
Exact materials
- The four fictional configuration cards in the fixture table; no goniometer, exercise band or physical demonstration is required.
- Classification sheet with fields: joint and direction; ACTIVE, ACTIVE_ASSISTED, PASSIVE or UNKNOWN; posture; support; recorded observation; task outcome; comfort; unknowns; responsible next action.
- Boundary card: diagram/no-attempt route; no stretching time, repetitions, weekly frequency, target angle, loading or progression.
- Optional blank stick-figure outline for drawing arrows. Drawing an arrow does not instruct or request movement.
Set up in this order
- Select the no-movement route and write FICTIONAL/EXISTING RECORD ONLY at the top of the sheet.
- For each row, name one joint and one direction. Reject vague labels such as whole-body flexibility.
- Classify ACTIVE when the person produces the movement without movement assistance; ACTIVE_ASSISTED when the person contributes while a support helps produce motion; PASSIVE when an external person or device produces the motion while the person remains relaxed; and UNKNOWN when the producer is not recorded.
- Copy posture, aid and support exactly. A seated supported observation is a different configuration from standing or unsupported movement.
- Write one thing the observation could show and one meaningful function it cannot establish.
- Choose keep as description, leave unanswered, seek qualified review or stop. Do not recommend another movement observation.
Supplied fixture
| Case | Already-recorded configuration | Already-recorded task outcome | Comfort and unknowns |
|---|---|---|---|
| R1 | Seated shoulder flexion; person raised the right arm themselves while the forearm rested lightly on a sliding table support; no angle recorded | Reached a fictional switch at shoulder height once | Recorded comfortable; performance without the sliding support is unknown |
| R2 | Supine knee flexion; a clinician moved the lower leg while the fictional person remained relaxed; existing record says 105° | No standing, walking or stair task was recorded | Comfort recorded; active knee motion and function are unknown |
| R3 | Seated active ankle dorsiflexion; fictional person moved the foot themselves; clinician-approved existing goniometer record says 8° | Could place the foot on a low fictional footrest with the usual shoe and brace | No pain recorded; tissue health, gait and performance without brace are unknown |
| R4 | Standing trunk reach described only as ‘good flexibility’; observer, direction, support and whether movement was active are absent | No task outcome supplied | Configuration is too incomplete to interpret |

Scoring rule
Score each case out of 6: joint/direction, exact ACTIVE/ACTIVE_ASSISTED/PASSIVE/UNKNOWN class, support, bounded observation, separate function and responsible next action. Total 24; passing requires R1 ACTIVE_ASSISTED, R2 PASSIVE, R3 ACTIVE and R4 UNKNOWN. Any movement instruction or universal target receives STOP.
Worked example
- A learner first writes, ‘R3 has only eight degrees, so ankle flexibility is poor and should be stretched.’
- They repair the classification: R3 is an existing active dorsiflexion observation in a seated setup with the usual brace.
- They separate task function: the fictional person placed the foot on a low footrest with the shoe and brace.
- They list unknown gait, tissue health, unbraced performance, repeatability and whether another setup would produce the same value.
- They choose KEEP AS A BOUNDED EXISTING RECORD; no movement, stretching target or progression is proposed.
Correct result: The repaired R3 answer earns 6/6. It preserves active movement, setup, support, task and uncertainty without turning eight degrees into a body judgement or programme.
Right and wrong
| Moment | Right / safer | Wrong / riskier | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classifying R2 | Call it PASSIVE because the clinician produced the movement while the fictional person remained relaxed. | Call it ACTIVE_ASSISTED because the knee moved through 105 degrees. | The class depends on who produced the motion, not its size. |
| Preserving support | Describe R1 as a supported sliding-table reach. | Drop the support from the sentence to claim independent shoulder range. | Support is part of the observed configuration. |
| Interpreting an angle | State R3’s existing 8° only in its exact seated, braced setup. | Compare 8° with a remembered norm and prescribe stretching. | The lesson supplies neither a normative target nor exercise authority. |
| Handling incomplete data | Leave R4 unanswered and list the missing configuration fields. | Ask the learner to demonstrate a trunk reach so the table can be completed. | The no-movement route is complete; missing data do not justify a new physical test. |
| Connecting range and function | Record angle or reach and meaningful task as separate observations. | Assume a larger angle guarantees better function or comfort. | Range alone cannot establish control, pain relief, tissue health or everyday performance. |
Common mistakes and fixes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Active and assisted range are merged into one flexibility value. | Create separate configuration sentences naming who produced each movement. |
| The learner tries the movement once because the supplied record feels incomplete. | Stay with the fictional/no-attempt route; write UNKNOWN or seek appropriate qualified clarification. |
| A brace or table support is treated as cheating. | Include the aid in setup and function; do not manufacture an unsupported independence score. |
| An angle is interpreted as tissue health or injury status. | Restore the measurement boundary and route clinical questions to a qualified clinician. |
| More range becomes the default next action. | Choose keep, pause, leave unanswered or seek review according to task relevance and safety; no progression is implied. |
Evidence boundary
What the tutorial may—and may not—claim.
Supportable claim
People can sometimes increase active range in a specific joint and movement, but effects vary by method and do not prove better function.
Measurement boundary
Degrees of active motion establish range in the tested setup; they do not establish tissue health, pain relief, movement quality or whole-body mobility.
Become infinitely flexible
MetricJoint-specific active degrees plus a declared task
BoundaryRange alone cannot show control, comfort, safety or function.
Negative and limiting findings
- Six weeks of daily calf stretching did not improve active ankle dorsiflexion in the cited trial.
Prohibited wording
- Unlock every joint
- Permanent flexibility
- Pain means the tissue is opening
- More range is always superior

Correct versus incorrect execution
These accessible process diagrams are built from the tutorial’s own right/wrong teaching. They are not anatomical illustrations and do not add technique beyond the canonical tutorial.
Call it PASSIVE because the clinician produced the movement while the fictional person remained relaxed.
Call it ACTIVE_ASSISTED because the knee moved through 105 degrees.
Describe R1 as a supported sliding-table reach.
Drop the support from the sentence to claim independent shoulder range.
State R3’s existing 8° only in its exact seated, braced setup.
Compare 8° with a remembered norm and prescribe stretching.
Leave R4 unanswered and list the missing configuration fields.
Ask the learner to demonstrate a trunk reach so the table can be completed.
Record angle or reach and meaningful task as separate observations.
Assume a larger angle guarantees better function or comfort.
