Identify safe familiar objects by tracing structure before naming them

Haptic recognition combines skin sensation, hand movement and object knowledge. This lesson teaches a repeatable scan: find the outer envelope, edges, material and safe moving parts, then name the object only after describing those features. Sight stays blocked only while seated and handling harmless objects.

1 · Permission and limits

Know exactly what you may do

You may

  • Practise seated with clean, blunt, lightweight household objects whose identity and safe use are already known.
  • Use sight, a helper or an assistive grip whenever needed.

Qualified help is required for

  • Clinical assessment of object recognition by touch, sensation, hand function or neurological symptoms.
  • Training with disability-specific orientation techniques when object handling has meaningful consequences.

2 · Get ready

Gather what you need and check the starting conditions

What you need

  • Six familiar, clean, blunt, lightweight objects with distinct shapes, such as a spoon, peg, large key ring, sponge, cup and clothes brush.
  • An opaque cloth bag or tabletop screen, numbered object labels, timer and record sheet.
  • A stable chair and clear table with every object within easy reach.

Before you start

  • Inspect every object visually and remove sharp edges, loose parts, residue, allergens and objects that can spill or switch on.
  • Choose one hand or declared two-hand method and a 20-second exploration limit.
  • Arrange for a helper if reaching into a bag, grip loss or visual blocking could be unsafe.

3 · The method

Follow these steps in order

  1. Build a safe object set

    Choose six known objects that differ in overall form and function. Number them and write the answer key before blocking sight.

    Why: Known harmless objects keep the task about recognition, not mystery-object risk.

    Check: Every object has a number, name and passed safety check.

  2. Find the outer envelope

    With the object supported on the table, trace its overall length, width and thickness before exploring details.

    Why: Global shape sharply narrows the possibilities and reduces aimless squeezing.

    Check: You can describe the object as long, round, flat, hollow or another clear form before naming it.

  3. Trace edges and parts

    Follow the perimeter and count handles, corners, openings, curves or branches. Keep fingers moving slowly toward known space.

    Why: Relations among parts often identify an object better than texture alone.

    Check: The record names at least two parts and how they connect.

  4. Check material and movement

    Describe hard or soft, smooth or rough and flexible or rigid. Move a part only when the object is designed to move and the helper confirmed it is safe.

    Why: Material and lawful movement provide extra cues without forcing or damaging the object.

    Check: No part is forced, detached or activated.

  5. State a hypothesis before reveal

    Name the object, give confidence from 0 to 100 and cite the two strongest cues. Then look or let the helper reveal it.

    Why: Committing first makes feedback informative and separates recognition from post-hoc explanation.

    Check: The name, confidence and cues are written before visual confirmation.

  6. Repair on a new object

    For an error, identify the missed cue and apply the full scan to a matched unfamiliar object after at least 24 hours.

    Why: A new item tests whether the scan method transfers beyond memorising one set.

    Check: The retest log identifies the earlier error and the cue used on the new item.

Scenario

Lee explores a clean silicone pastry brush hidden behind a tabletop screen.

Walkthrough

  1. Lee supports the object on the table and finds a long narrow envelope.
  2. He traces a thicker handle joined to a flat fan-shaped end.
  3. He notes that the end is soft, flexible and made of many parallel strips.
  4. He answers pastry brush at 85% confidence, citing handle-plus-flexible-strips.
  5. After reveal, he later uses the same scan to distinguish an unfamiliar bottle brush from a comb.

Result

The object is correctly identified from connected parts, material and flexibility. The later item shows use of the scan on a new object, not general neurological competence.

7 · Practice

Turn the steps into a usable skill

First session

  1. Inspect and number six objects with sight.
  2. Complete two unscored global-to-local scans.
  3. Run six timed hidden trials with immediate reveal.
  4. For each miss, write the overlooked structural cue.
  5. Finish with two new objects if the hand remains comfortable.

Repeat plan

Practise six to eight objects on two sessions per week for two weeks. Replace at least half the set each session and keep the same scan order. Stop before grip fatigue; do not shorten time until accuracy and complete cue descriptions are stable.

Progress when

  • Every object is scanned in the declared order, and each correct name cites two features that are truly present.
  • The scan proceeds envelope, parts, material, then name without prompting.
  • Unfamiliar-object names, cue completeness and errors are reported separately rather than forced through a universal pass count.

Do not progress when

  • Objects are guessed from memorised order or sound cues.
  • Grip fatigue, pain, numbness or dropping appears.
  • The set would need hazardous, unfamiliar or consequential items to become harder.

8 · Check the result

Measure what changed

Correct object identification plus complete structural cue record.

How: Count correct names out of six and separately count trials with an outer-form description, two linked parts and a confidence rating compared with correctness.

Good result: Every object receives a complete envelope–parts–material scan before naming, each name is checked against the key, and the learner shows the named error repair on an unfamiliar object without a safety breach. The number correct is descriptive, not a diagnostic pass score.

This does not prove: It does not diagnose touch-recognition difficulty, establish clinical normality or show superior touch across scales and object classes.
