Classify evidence-sensitive revision in five benign fictional cases
This tutorial teaches evidence-sensitive revision, not a personality label. For each benign fictional case, you rank the initial source, inspect new evidence and power context, write your own final answer and confidence, choose a verification action and then classify the pattern. Supplied final answers stay in the staged key so the learner actually performs the update rather than merely reading one.

Authority and safety
- Use only the bounded configuration. Choose a neutral, low-stakes claim. Avoid identity-threatening, traumatic, political or relationship disputes for the first cycle.
- Stop if the frame becomes compelled disclosure, debate pressure, belief scoring or an attempt to make someone compliant.
- Stop if power imbalance, identity threat or distress makes reflection unsafe.
Exact materials
- The five fictional cases H1–H5 in the fixture; no personal belief, live disagreement or partner is needed.
- Classification key: AR = accuracy-sensitive revision supported by better evidence; BU = bounded uncertainty preserved because credible evidence conflicts; PL = polite language without demonstrated revision; DF = deference or lowered confidence without better evidence, especially under power; NI = insufficient information for a humility inference.
- Evidence-order card: current official dated notice outranks an undated blog or old flyer for the supplied scheduling question; two current official notices with conflicting dates require BU and verification rather than forced certainty.
- Worksheet with fields for evidence quality, answer change, confidence change, power/affiliation flag, observable action, allowed label and non-claim.
- Boundary card: FICTIONAL BENIGN TOPICS ONLY; no personality rank, ideology, debate, disclosure, surveillance, compelled agreement or attempt to make another person open-minded.
- Answer key hidden until every case has a label.
Set up in this order
- Copy the five labels and evidence-order rule. Do not infer humility from a confidence number or courteous phrase alone.
- For each case, read the initial answer/source and record whether you would keep or question it before opening the new-evidence column.
- Read the new evidence and power context. Write your own final answer and confidence without looking at the staged model.
- Write one observable action: correct the record, verify a conflict, preserve the current answer or flag unsupported pressure.
- Choose AR, BU, PL, DF or NI and explain the evidence path. Revision counts as accuracy-sensitive only when better evidence supports it.
- Open the staged key, compare without rewriting the original, and finish with a non-claim about personality or broad open-mindedness.
Supplied fixture
| Case | Question | Initial answer and confidence | New evidence | Power or affiliation context | Learner final answer and confidence | Learner verification action | Learner label |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| H1 | Saturday museum opening time | 9:00; 85%, undated travel blog | Current dated official museum schedule says 10:00 | Evidence supplied by an unfamiliar peer | [record] | [record] | [AR/BU/PL/DF/NI] |
| H2 | Community library closing time | 18:00; 80%, current dated library page | Manager asserts 17:00 verbally but supplies no source | Manager controls the fictional person's work rota | [record] | [record] | [AR/BU/PL/DF/NI] |
| H3 | Planetarium show length | 45 minutes; 90%, current ticket | No new evidence; a friend asks ‘Are you sure?’ | Close friend with no formal power | [record] | [record] | [AR/BU/PL/DF/NI] |
| H4 | Lecture location | Hall A; 95%, old flyer | Two current official notices conflict: Hall B and Hall C | No power relationship | [record] | [record] | [AR/BU/PL/DF/NI] |
| H5 | Garden tour start time | 14:00; 70%, current booking email | Group leader prefers 13:30 but gives no revised notice | Leader controls participation in the fictional group | [record] | [record] | [AR/BU/PL/DF/NI] |

Scoring rule
For each case award 1 for ranking evidence, 1 for an evidence-sensitive final answer/confidence, 1 for power/affiliation treatment, 1 for an observable verification action and 1 for the correct label plus non-claim: 5 each, 25 total. Passing requires H2/H5 not called AR, H3 not scored from polite words and H4 preserving BU.
Worked example
- For H4, identify the initial source as an old flyer and the new sources as two current official notices.
- Notice that the current notices conflict: Hall B versus Hall C. Neither can support certainty by itself.
- Record the final answer as unresolved between B and C with confidence reduced from 95% to 60%.
- Record the observable action: flag the conflict and request a dated organiser correction rather than following the preferred notice silently.
- Assign AR because the old answer is revised in response to stronger evidence, and BU because material conflict remains.
Correct result: H4 earns 5/5 as AR + BU with no power-pressure flag and an explicit verification action. It demonstrates a correct worksheet classification, not wisdom, fairness or a stable personality trait.
Right and wrong
| Moment | Right / safer | Wrong / riskier | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading H1 | Treat revision toward the dated official schedule as accuracy-sensitive. | Penalize the final 90% confidence because humility must mean more doubt. | Confidence can appropriately rise when evidence quality improves. |
| Reading H2 | Flag manager power and lack of supporting evidence. | Call public agreement humility. | Deference under power can mimic openness without accuracy-sensitive revision. |
| Reading H3 | Classify the courteous phrase as PL and avoid a personality inference. | Award humility because the words sound modest. | Language alone does not show evidence engagement or behavioral revision. |
| Reading H4 | Preserve uncertainty while seeking a dated resolution. | Choose one current notice merely to appear decisive. | Conflicting credible evidence warrants bounded uncertainty. |
| Using the pack | Stay with benign fictional schedules and score only worksheet classifications. | Replace a case with someone's political, religious or workplace belief. | The governed frame excludes compelled disclosure, belief scoring and persuasion. |
Common mistakes and fixes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Every confidence decrease is labelled humility. | Require an evidence path and inspect power before assigning AR. |
| High confidence after correction is treated as arrogance. | Judge calibration to source quality, as in H1, not confidence direction alone. |
| Polite uncertainty is scored as behavioral openness. | Separate words, answer revision, source checking and observable action. |
| Conflict between two current notices is resolved by guessing. | Assign BU, retain both possibilities and record the verification action. |
| The fictional worksheet becomes a way to rank another person's ego. | Stop and return to answer-level scoring; no personality inference or compliance target is authorized. |
Evidence boundary
What the tutorial may—and may not—claim.
Supportable claim
Brief interventions and affiliated conversations can increase selected topic-specific humility measures, but broad behavior change is not established.
Measurement boundary
Declare topic, self-report versus behavior, accuracy, power relation, affiliation, dissent, delay and willingness to revise; lower confidence is not automatically humility.
Become ego-free and always open-minded
MetricAccuracy-sensitive revision, expressed uncertainty and behavioral engagement on declared topics
BoundaryLower confidence or polite language cannot prove wisdom, fairness or genuine openness.
Negative and limiting findings
- The intervention did not increase engagement with diverse viewpoints.
- General humility and self-rated knowledge effects were inconsistent, and conversation results relied on self-report and affiliation.
Prohibited wording
- become ego-free
- humility score proves wisdom
- make opponents open-minded
- doubt yourself more
