Separate aroma identity, quality and intensity using only familiar safe foods

Smell discrimination means telling declared aromas or aroma features apart. The safest route uses written descriptor cards with no exposure. An optional practical route uses only two or three labelled foods or drinks that the learner already consumes safely, in a ventilated room, with one brief ordinary sniff. The task never uses essential oils, fragrances, cleaners, smoke, spoiled food or unknown substances.

1 · Permission and limits

Know exactly what you may do

You may

  • Use descriptor cards with no exposure, or use labelled routine foods already tolerated safely.
  • Keep environmental alarms, expiry checks and ordinary food-safety supports in place.

Qualified help is required for

  • Assessment or treatment of smell loss, distortion, hallucinated smells, head injury, infection or neurological concern.
  • Any clinical olfactory threshold or rehabilitation programme.

Never do this from the page alone

2 · Get ready

Gather what you need and check the starting conditions

What you need

  • No-exposure packet of ten cards, two for each field: identity (‘coffee’, ‘black tea’), quality (‘roasted’, ‘woody’), intensity (‘2 of 5’, ‘very strong’), familiarity (‘smelled most mornings’, ‘new to me’) and liking (‘pleasant’, ‘disliked’). Print the correct field on each card back.
  • Optional practical packet: three separate closed containers holding labelled familiar foods or drinks already used safely.
  • A helper-made code key, timer and sheet with identity, quality, intensity, familiarity, liking and confidence fields.
  • A ventilated room with an immediate way to close containers and leave.

Before you start

  • Use the no-exposure route if there is asthma, allergy, migraine, nausea, pregnancy-related sensitivity, recent smell change or any uncertainty about exposure.
  • Confirm labels, ingredients, freshness and ordinary safe use; do not ask the learner to ingest anything.
  • Keep all containers closed except the one in use and agree a stop signal.

3 · The method

Follow these steps in order

  1. Choose the safe route

    Select descriptor cards only, or select two or three labelled familiar foods already handled without trouble. Write the choice and reason.

    Why: A deliberate route choice prevents curiosity from turning into an exposure challenge.

    Check: The sheet states no-exposure or familiar-aroma and lists every permitted item.

  2. Separate smell dimensions

    Before any trial, define identity, quality, intensity, familiarity and liking in separate columns.

    Why: Aroma identity is not the same as strength, pleasantness or personal memory.

    Check: The learner can give a different example answer for each column.

  3. Code a balanced set

    For the no-exposure route, shuffle the ten supplied cards face down; turn one at a time without viewing the answer on its back. For the practical route, a helper assigns hidden letter codes and prepares nine trials with each familiar item appearing equally often. Product labels stay available for safety.

    Why: Balanced coding allows feedback without turning the substance into a mystery.

    Check: Card answers or aroma identities remain hidden until the learner commits a field or identity, while every practical ingredient label remains visible.

  4. Take one ordinary sniff

    On the practical route, open one container at a comfortable ordinary distance, take one brief natural sniff without deep inhalation and close it immediately. On the card route, read one printed phrase once; there is no container or exposure.

    Why: Long or repeated inhalation increases exposure and adaptation, which can dull later trials.

    Check: A practical container is open for one ordinary sniff only, or one card phrase is read once; no extra exposure is introduced.

  5. Record before reveal

    For practical aroma, choose the identity label and then record quality, intensity, familiarity, liking and confidence. For a card, choose exactly one of those five field headings and explain which word makes it fit. Commit before viewing the key.

    Why: Separate pre-feedback fields show whether a correct label came with calibrated confidence and what feature was perceived.

    Check: The practical row or card-field choice and reason are saved before the answer is checked.

  6. Space, reveal and transfer

    For practical aroma, wait at least one minute in fresh room air, reveal the code and note the missed cue; after 48 hours repeat six trials with changed containers or order, never stronger aromas. For cards, reveal each back after commitment, record any confused field and re-sort the same ten cards after 48 hours in a new order.

    Why: Spacing limits adaptation; a changed arrangement tests recognition beyond the original sequence.

    Check: Practical identity or card-field retest results are recorded separately from the first set, with exposure symptoms marked not applicable on the card route.

4 · Worked example

See the whole method used once

Scenario

Ana routinely and safely uses ground coffee, dry black tea and cinnamon oatmeal; each remains in its original labelled container.

Walkthrough

  1. A helper checks labels and codes nine balanced trials while Ana reads every ingredient list.
  2. Ana opens code B, takes one normal sniff from a comfortable distance and closes it.
  3. She selects tea, writes woody/dry, intensity 2/5, familiar 5/5, liking 3/5 and confidence 70%.
  4. The key confirms tea, and she waits in fresh air before the next trial.
  5. Two days later the helper changes the jars and order; Ana completes six trials without a deeper sniff.

Result

Ana distinguishes the declared familiar aromas under this setup and keeps quality, intensity and liking separate. The result does not measure a clinical threshold or prove environmental hazard detection.

7 · Practice

Turn the steps into a usable skill

First session

  1. Choose the no-exposure or familiar-aroma route.
  2. Learn the five separate response fields.
  3. Complete three unscored descriptor examples.
  4. Run up to nine spaced practical trials or sort all ten no-exposure cards.
  5. Close all containers and review symptoms before scoring.

Repeat plan

Use no more than one short session on a day and two sessions in a week. Keep items ordinary and familiar, change only code order or containers, and include a six-trial delayed set after 48 hours. Stop practical exposure if comfort changes.

Progress when

  • Practical identity errors or no-exposure card-field errors are reported across two matched sets and corrected from the hidden key.
  • The learner uses one sniff and full spacing without prompting.
  • Identity, intensity, familiarity and liking remain separate.

Do not progress when

  • Any symptom, aversion or anxiety rises.
  • The proposed next item is concentrated, unknown, non-food or not routinely tolerated.

8 · Check the result

Measure what changed

Correct identity among a declared set of familiar aromas.

How: Count correct identity choices out of balanced trials; report confidence calibration, intensity ratings and any symptom separately. For card-only practice, score correct separation of the five dimensions.

Good result: On practical aroma trials, every identity is committed before reveal and delayed errors stay visible; on cards, every phrase is assigned to the key’s field with any confusion corrected. Both routes keep identity, quality, intensity, familiarity and liking separate, and no accuracy cutoff is treated as a clinical smell threshold.

This does not prove: It does not establish a clinical smell threshold, recovery from smell loss, hazard detection, diagnosis or general transfer.
