Research Observatory

Purpose

The Observatory tracks interesting human-capability phenomena that do not yet justify a Titan module. Research status is separate from capability level. An Observatory entry cannot alter the Core profile or an operational capability level.

Promotion rule

  • Define a safe, reproducible protocol and an objective direct outcome.
  • Show delayed retention and meaningful transfer beyond repeated test items.
  • Replicate the effect in an appropriate population with adverse-event reporting.
  • State exclusions, professional gates, accessibility routes and claim limits.
  • Show that the measure cannot be passed by lowering quality, selecting easy cases or increasing risk.

Four entries are added. Two record findings that did not replicate or did not reach the effect their popular framing implies. A register that only accumulates promising results is a marketing document, and negative frontier evidence is kept here deliberately so that it remains visible to the next audit wave.

What is known

Two single-session target-reaching experiments tested whether people could voluntarily modulate the firing rates of a pair of motor units in the tibialis anterior using real-time visual feedback. Neither task produced evidence of independent control; the muscle’s ordinary rigid recruitment behaviour persisted. That people can generally learn arbitrary, independent control of individual motor units. Titan makes no such claim and no training route is offered.

Open question

The null result is bounded to one muscle, the lower limb and single-session training. Whether any muscle, feedback system, training duration or neurological condition permits voluntary modification of recruitment or firing relationships remains open.

Reassessment trigger

A multi-session study, in any muscle, reporting independent modulation that survives a delayed retest with the feedback removed.

Twelve participants aged 18 to 26 raked a fingertip slowly through dry sand in a covered box and reported detecting a buried cube before contact. They achieved about 70.7 per cent precision within the modelled detectable range, at distances of roughly seven centimetres. That this is trainable, or that it is a sense in any ordinary meaning. Twelve participants, one granular medium, no training condition and no retest. The authors themselves note that grain size and friction may reshape the signal in other media, and that everyday application is not evident. Popular coverage described this as a "seventh sense"; that framing is not supported by the study and is the exact kind of inflation the Observatory exists to resist.

Open question

Whether sensitivity, discrimination or functional use improves with practice.

Reassessment trigger

A training study in more than one granular medium showing improvement beyond test familiarity, with a delayed retest. Publication in a peer-reviewed journal rather than a conference proceeding would also raise the evidence weight.
