Practise one harmless line-tilt discrimination and test its narrow transfer
Perceptual learning is improvement in judging a declared sensory pattern through practice. It is usually stimulus-specific. This lesson uses high-contrast cards with a line tilted left or right by a fixed angle. The learner keeps viewing distance, lighting and usual correction constant, establishes baseline accuracy without feedback, practises short feedback blocks, tests after a delay and uses a new line length to check narrow transfer. This is not vision therapy, diagnosis or a route to normal vision.

What you need
- Forty high-contrast line cards: 20 left and 20 right at the same declared tilt
- A second matched set with a different line length for transfer
- Answer key hidden during tests
- Fixed 50 cm viewing-distance marker, stable lighting and timer
- Error/response/strain sheet
Before you start
- Use both eyes and the usual glasses/contact lenses unless an eye professional directs otherwise.
- Fix comfortable lighting, card size, contrast, tilt and 50 cm distance.
- Shuffle left/right order and keep the answer key out of view during baseline and tests.
- Do not begin with new vision loss, double vision, eye pain, flashes/floaters, severe headache or dizziness.
3 · The method
Follow these steps in order
- Lock the visual fixture
Record line angle/length, contrast, card distance, lighting, both-eye use and usual correction.
Why: Threshold and error depend on viewing conditions.
Check: All settings are measurable and unchanged.
- Learn the response rule
For two obvious sample cards, say LEFT when the top leans left and RIGHT when it leans right; do not rotate the card.
Why: A clear response mapping prevents label confusion.
Check: Both samples are named correctly; the visible 'Learn the response rule' check is satisfied.
- Measure baseline without feedback
Classify 20 shuffled cards one at a time, recording response and time; do not reveal the answer until the block ends.
Why: Baseline should not contain learning feedback.
Check: All 20 responses and errors are retained.
- Practise in short feedback blocks
Complete two 10-card blocks. After each response, check the key, state correct/incorrect and view the correct orientation for one second.
Why: Immediate specific feedback links the stimulus to the right response.
Check: Every practice response receives the same feedback.
- Rest the eyes
Look away at a distant comfortable target and rest for two minutes between blocks; stop for strain or visual symptoms.
Why: Short rest reduces fatigue as a source of error.
Check: Symptoms return to baseline before continuing.
- Run a delayed matched test
After at least 10 minutes doing a non-visual or comfortable neutral task, classify 20 matched cards without feedback under the original setup.
Why: Delay separates retained change from immediate answer memory.
Check: Conditions and scoring match baseline; the visible 'Run a delayed matched test' check is satisfied.
- Test narrow transfer
Use the new line-length set with the same tilt, contrast, distance and response rule. Report it separately.

4 · Worked example
See the whole method used once
Scenario
At 50 cm, a learner judges 20 cards with 5-degree left/right tilt, practises two feedback blocks, waits 10 minutes and tests both the original-length and shorter-line sets.
Walkthrough
- Baseline is 15/20 correct, with four of five errors on right-tilting cards.
- Practice blocks are 8/10 and 9/10 with immediate answer-key feedback.
- After the delay, the matched test is 18/20 with similar response time and no strain.
- The shorter-line transfer set is 15/20, the same as baseline-level accuracy.
- The learner reports retained improvement for the trained line length but no demonstrated transfer to shorter lines.
Result
Accuracy improved on the trained fixture but not the changed line length. This does not establish improved everyday vision, diagnosis, restored normal sight or a clinical benefit.

7 · Practice
Turn the steps into a usable skill
First session
- Set and record the comfortable visual fixture.
- Complete two obvious samples and a 20-card no-feedback baseline.
- Practise two 10-card feedback blocks with two-minute rests.
- After a 10-minute delay, complete the matched no-feedback test.
- Complete one new-line-length transfer set and write the narrow conclusion.
Repeat plan
Use one short session on three non-consecutive days, each with two 10-card feedback blocks and rests. On day four, run only a no-feedback retention test and one single-feature transfer set. Stop after 80 total card judgements per session or earlier for strain.
Progress when
- Matched-test accuracy improves on two days without slower responses or strain.
- Left/right response bias decreases rather than overall accuracy hiding it.
- One-feature transfer is demonstrated directly before making any transfer statement.
Do not progress when
- Eye strain, headache, dizziness, double vision or new visual symptoms appears.
- Improvement requires moving closer, brighter light or changed correction.
- The exercise is proposed as clinical vision treatment or safety certification.
8 · Check the result
Measure what changed
Accuracy, error bias and response time for one declared visual discrimination, plus a separate functional outcome when clinically justified
How: Keep stimulus and viewing conditions fixed; compare no-feedback baseline and delayed tests and report single-feature transfer separately.
Good result: Matched accuracy improves beyond ordinary variation on two days without worse time or symptoms, and transfer is claimed only if directly shown.
