Compare two identical bouts across one fixed recovery interval

Between-bout recovery is the fraction of a declared task's performance restored after a fixed interval. This lesson teaches a provider-led paired-bout test: lock one work bout, complete it without changing the endpoint, enter one timed passive or active recovery, repeat the identical bout and calculate restored performance. The provider controls effort, recovery mode/duration, repetitions, monitoring and whether high-intensity testing is appropriate.

1 · Permission and limits

Know exactly what you may do

You may

  • Between-bout recovery: Record device, setup, work duration, resistance, start, recovery and formula. The second bout must match the first. Start on the cue, perform the declared work and stop exactly at the endpoint; do not save effort for a preferred recovery score unless pacing is itself prescribed.
  • During an authorised attempt, Stay in the prescribed recovery activity and intensity for the full interval; do not stretch, walk, drink stimulants or add another strategy unless it is part of the protocol. After bout two, enter the provider's cool-down and report symptoms; do not add a third bout to improve the ratio.
  • Keep the complete bout-and-recovery card visible and retain both raw bout values so another reader can reproduce the restored-performance fraction.

Qualified help is required for

  • Review whether the selected work bout and recovery mode are safe and meaningful before authorising a paired-bout recovery test.
  • Set the work bout, intensity, validity, recovery mode and duration, repetitions, monitoring, termination and retest schedule.
  • Start the recovery timer at the exact end of bout one, hold recovery mode and intensity constant and confirm that bout two repeats the same resistance, duration and endpoint.

2 · Get ready

Gather what you need and check the starting conditions

What you need

  • Calibrated cycle ergometer or other provider-selected task device
  • One synchronized work/recovery timer
  • Power/work recording for both bouts
  • Fixed recovery setup, such as seated rest or a declared easy workload
  • A paired-bout worksheet for mode, resistance, duration, bout-one and bout-two work, exact recovery start and finish, recovery activity, symptoms, validity and calculation.

Before you start

  • Write the exact bout duration, resistance/start, recovery mode, recovery duration and second-bout start event.
  • Tell the provider about illness, chest symptoms, unusual fatigue, musculoskeletal pain and recent competition or training.
  • Decide the restored-performance formula before seeing bout two.
  • Place the paired-bout protocol where both people can see it and point to the exact work endpoint and recovery start. Begin only when mode, resistance, duration and recovery rule are all filled in.
  • Rehearse the bout endpoint and immediate transition into the declared recovery so the first measured interval starts without delay.

3 · The method

Follow these steps in order

  1. Lock the paired-bout fixture

    Record device, setup, work duration, resistance, start, recovery and formula. The second bout must match the first.

    Why: Recovery cannot be measured if the tasks differ.

    Check: A complete protocol card is visible before warm-up.

  2. Complete bout one

    Start on the cue, perform the declared work and stop exactly at the endpoint; do not save effort for a preferred recovery score unless pacing is itself prescribed.

    Why: Bout one is the reference denominator.

    Check: The full valid power/work trace is saved.

  3. Start recovery immediately

    Begin the recovery clock at the work stop cue and enter the declared passive seat or easy workload without delay.

    Why: Uncounted transition time changes total recovery.

    Check: The timer and recovery trace begin at the same event.

  4. Keep recovery mode fixed

    Stay in the prescribed recovery activity and intensity for the full interval; do not stretch, walk, drink stimulants or add another strategy unless it is part of the protocol.

    Why: Recovery interventions cannot be compared when mixed.

    Check: The recovery log shows no undeclared action.

  5. Restart bout two on time

    At the exact cue, return to the identical start and perform the same bout with the same instructions.

    Why: A late start or altered resistance creates a different test.

    Check: Setup and timing match bout one.

  6. Finish and recover safely

    After bout two, enter the provider's cool-down and report symptoms; do not add a third bout to improve the ratio.

    Why: The planned pair is the measurement unit.

    Check: Only two bouts appear in the raw record.

  7. Calculate restored performance

    Divide the second-bout work or predeclared performance by the first-bout value and multiply by 100. Keep both raw values and recovery conditions beside the percentage.

    Why: A percentage alone can hide low or invalid first-bout work.

4 · Worked example

See the whole method used once

Scenario

A provider uses two 20-second cycle bouts at the same resistance with exactly three minutes of passive seated recovery.

Walkthrough

  1. Bout one produces 11.0 kJ and ends on the 20-second cue.
  2. The recovery clock starts immediately; the learner remains seated and does not pedal for three minutes.
  3. Bout two uses the same bike, resistance and start and produces 9.35 kJ.
  4. The learner cools down and no third bout is added.
  5. Restoration is calculated as 9.35 divided by 11.0 times 100, or 85%.

Result

The result is 85% restoration after three minutes of passive recovery for this exact cycle task. It does not establish a universal recovery rate or the best recovery mode.

7 · Practice

Turn the steps into a usable skill

First session

  1. Provider locks the paired-bout and recovery protocol.
  2. Complete warm-up and one short submaximal transition rehearsal.
  3. After full rest, complete bout one and start recovery immediately.
  4. Complete the identical second bout on time.
  5. Cool down, calculate restored performance and review symptoms/raw traces.

Repeat plan

The qualified provider controls bout intensity, recovery condition, repetitions and retest timing. Compare recovery modes only in planned counterbalanced sessions with adequate washout; no return-to-play decision comes from this test alone.

Progress when

  • Both bouts and the recovery interval match the declared timing and configuration.
  • The restored fraction improves beyond test variability while bout-one performance remains valid.
  • Symptoms and full post-test recovery remain acceptable.

Do not progress when

  • Bout-one output falls, making the fraction look better.
  • Recovery mode, transition time, resistance or duration changes.
  • Symptoms, unusual fatigue or incomplete recovery make a repeat inappropriate.

8 · Check the result

Measure what changed

Fraction of first-bout task performance restored after one fixed recovery interval

How: Use identical bouts and a precisely timed declared recovery; retain both raw outputs and calculate bout-two divided by bout-one performance.

Good result: The paired bouts are valid and the restored fraction improves beyond test error without a lower first-bout reference or worse symptoms.

This does not prove: It does not prove full physiological recovery, the best universal strategy, clinical readiness or safe return to sport/work.
