Reach to visible targets accurately before adding speed or movement

This lesson teaches a stationary reach-and-place task with safe objects. You will fix the geometry, look at the target, guide a controlled reach, pause before release, classify endpoint error and vary one target position. Accuracy comes before speed.

1 · Permission and limits

Know exactly what you may do

You may

  • Use soft objects and six stationary targets within a comfortable, seated or otherwise stable reach.
  • Fix target geometry, confirm readiness before each placement, record contacts and drops, and move only one target for the transfer trial.
  • Report target contacts and safe reaches for this geometry only, without claiming sport, driving or rehabilitation transfer.

Qualified help is required for

2 · Get ready

Gather what you need and check the starting conditions

What you need

  • a stationary target-placement task with safe objects.
  • A non-slip target mat, soft beanbags or foam blocks, stable seat and optional forearm support.
  • A path/endpoint sheet for target hit, edge, miss, correction, drop and movement time.

Before you start

  • Prepare six high-contrast stationary targets and twelve soft palm-sized objects on a stable tabletop
  • Before the first hand–eye coordination attempt, write the exact result you will score: Visual detection, movement path, endpoint error and product result.
  • Place all targets inside comfortable reach and remove breakable, sharp or hot objects.
  • Use ordinary vision correction and lighting; unexplained new visual change requires clinical review, not practice.

3 · The method

Follow these steps in order

  1. Fix the geometry

    Mark the seat, object start point and six target positions. Confirm each target can be touched while balance stays supported.

    Why: Consistent distance makes endpoint errors comparable.

    Check: The learner reaches every target without trunk lunge or loss of support.

  2. Look at the endpoint

    Before lifting the object, identify the target centre and keep visual attention there during the final half of the reach.

    Why: A declared visual endpoint guides the movement path.

    Check: The gaze or chosen visual access stays on the target through placement.

  3. Lift with a secure light hold

    Pick up one soft object using enough grip to prevent slipping, without crushing or hiding the target.

    Why: A stable object and visible target reduce avoidable correction.

    Check: The object remains secure and the target stays visible.

  4. Reach on a smooth path

    Move at a pace that permits stopping. Keep the object above the clear table and avoid a last-second sideways sweep.

    Why: Smooth, controllable travel limits overshoot and collision.

    Check: The path has no abrupt acceleration, table strike or balance change.

  5. Pause then release

    Pause directly over or on the centre for one count, then open the hand or release the aid without pushing.

    Mark centre, edge or miss and add left, right, near or far. Keep the first result even if corrected afterward.

  7. Correct one variable

    For a repeated miss direction, adjust only the start position, visual contrast, support or approach angle and make three matched reaches.

  8. Move one target only

    After ten accurate placements, move one target five centimetres while keeping the object, seat and rule constant. Make two reaches.

4 · Worked example

See the whole method used once

Scenario

A seated learner places twelve foam cubes onto six 8 cm coloured circles, two placements per circle.

Walkthrough

  1. They tape the chair and mat positions and confirm all targets are inside supported reach.
  2. The first six placements all contact their targets, but two land at the far edge of the most distant circle.
  3. They keep the target in view, pause above centre and label each endpoint before correction.
  4. Because both errors are far, they move the start point—not the target—two centimetres closer for three matched reaches.
  5. All three matched reaches land centre, and one more unchanged placement brings the contact count to ten. They then move one target five centimetres left; the final two placements both contact it with stable support.

Result

All twelve placements contact a target, centre accuracy improves after one declared start-point change and the final two reaches remain stable after the one-target transfer. This is not a moving-object or reaction-time result.

7 · Practice

Turn the steps into a usable skill

First session

  1. Arrange six high-contrast stationary targets at known tabletop coordinates & place twelve soft palm-sized objects inside an easy reach zone. Confirm seating, visual access & a no-lunge boundary; target contact, table contact, drop & unsafe reach receive separate marks.
  2. For each object, look at or access endpoint before lifting. Use a secure light hold & keep target visible through a smooth reach; hand pauses over endpoint before release rather than throwing or sliding object.
  3. Place six objects, one to each target & label endpoint error as short, long, left or right. Do not immediately move a target or change object size, because first pattern must show whether geometry or path correction is needed.
  4. Choose dominant endpoint error & alter only reach amplitude or path direction. Complete a second six-object pass while keeping start positions, gaze strategy & targets fixed; table strikes & abrupt acceleration remain errors even if contact occurs.
  5. After rest, move one target by a small declared distance & make two placements to it. This tests recalibration of eye–hand geometry; it does not justify faster movement, farther reach or a smaller object.
  6. Close by comparing ten-or-more target contacts, drops, path quality & posture. Save tabletop map with score so a later trial can reproduce same geometry instead of relying on memory.

Repeat plan

Use two later sessions with same soft objects & six-target map. First repeat original coordinates; later move one target only. Add distance or a second moved target after two twelve-object trials have at least ten contacts, no drops & no unsafe reach or table strike.
