Carry one provider-set pack over one declared level route

Load-carriage endurance is sustained travel with a specific external load, distribution, route and aid. This lesson teaches a supervised level-route walk: inspect the pack, centre and secure the load, fit hip/shoulder straps, walk at the agreed pace with the usual aid, keep the route visible, report symptoms at checkpoints and remove the pack before making adjustments. The provider controls load, distance, terrain, speed, rest and progression.

1 · Permission and limits

Know exactly what you may do

You may

  • Load-carriage endurance: Place the provider-selected load close to the back, prevent movement and weigh the complete pack; do not estimate by item labels. Loosen straps enough to put the pack on with authorised help, then set hip belt, shoulder straps and chest strap as taught without compressing breathing.
  • During an authorised attempt, Walk the marked level route at the agreed pace with the usual aid and natural step pattern; do not rush to shorten exposure. If fit or grip needs changing, stop at the designated surface, remove the pack with help and adjust it unloaded.
  • Verify the scale value and pack layout against the plan and record pace, assistance, gait change, discomfort, recovery and the exact route used.

Qualified help is required for

  • Assess load-carriage readiness, aid use, pack fit, skin and foot risk, route conditions and occupational constraints before selecting a carried load.
  • Assess readiness and select absolute/relative load, distribution, pack, route, footwear, pace, distance, assistance, monitoring and recovery.
  • Weigh the complete loaded pack, secure its contents, fit all straps and aids, observe gait and symptoms at checkpoints and remove the pack before making any adjustment.

2 · Get ready

Gather what you need and check the starting conditions

What you need

  • Provider-selected pack with intact straps and closures
  • Individually selected stable contents and internal load securing
  • Level inspected route with rest/pack-removal points
  • Usual footwear, mobility aid and optional physiological monitor
  • A load-carriage sheet for total pack mass, contents and distribution, fit, aid, route, surface, pace, distance, assistance, gait, symptoms and recovery.

Before you start

  • Inspect the pack and secure contents so nothing shifts, leaks or protrudes.
  • Record absolute load, body mass if appropriate, distribution, route, surface, footwear, aid and pace.
  • Report back, hip, knee, foot, skin, balance, cardiovascular or neurological concerns and any recent load-carriage exposure.
  • Weigh the finished pack, photograph or note its layout and fit every strap and usual aid. Take the first supervised steps only when the scale value and load arrangement match the written plan.
  • Rehearse fitting and removing the pack, standing with the planned support and walking the route without load before the supervised carry.

3 · The method

Follow these steps in order

  1. Build and weigh the pack

    Place the provider-selected load close to the back, prevent movement and weigh the complete pack; do not estimate by item labels.

    Why: Mass and distribution both change carriage demand.

    Check: The scale value and layout match the plan.

  2. Fit before standing

    Loosen straps enough to put the pack on with authorised help, then set hip belt, shoulder straps and chest strap as taught without compressing breathing.

    Why: Poor fit can create shifting, pressure and posture changes.

    Check: The pack stays close and straps do not pinch or restrict a full breath.

  3. Stand using the planned support

    Use the bench, helper or stable support specified by the provider; establish balance before walking.

    Why: The transition with the pack is part of the task.

    Check: The learner stands without a lurch or uncontrolled step.

  4. Start at the target pace

    Walk the marked level route at the agreed pace with the usual aid and natural step pattern; do not rush to shorten exposure.

    Why: Pace changes physiological cost and gait.

    Check: Checkpoint pace remains inside the declared band.

  5. Check fit and symptoms at markers

    At each marker, report breathing, pain, numbness, hot spots and balance; observe strap position and load shift.

    Why: Early signs can precede skin, nerve, gait or fatigue problems.

    Check: Each checkpoint has a complete report and the pack remains centred.

  6. Put the pack down before adjusting

    If fit or grip needs changing, stop at the designated surface, remove the pack with help and adjust it unloaded.

    Why: Reaching and twisting under load adds uncontrolled demand.

    Check: No strap adjustment occurs while walking or balancing under full load.

  7. Finish, remove and recheck

    Stop at the planned endpoint, remove the pack using the taught method, inspect skin/feet and record post-task gait and recovery.

    Why: After-effects are part of the carriage response.

    Check: The learner returns to baseline walking or the provider acts on the recorded change.

4 · Worked example

See the whole method used once

Scenario

A physiotherapist prescribes a 5 kg pack for one learner, centred high in the pack, over a 400 m level indoor route at a comfortable fixed pace with checks every 100 m.

Walkthrough

  1. The complete pack weighs 5.0 kg and contents are secured against the back panel.
  2. The learner fits the pack seated, stands with the rail and begins with the usual walking stick.
  3. At 100 and 200 m, pace and gait remain stable; at 300 m a right shoulder hot spot is reported.
  4. The learner stops at a bench, removes the pack and the provider adjusts the strap; the configuration change is recorded.
  5. The final 100 m is treated as an adapted segment, not merged with the original configuration.

Result

The learner completed 300 m in the original setup and 100 m after an attributed fit change. The result does not set a universal safe pack mass or occupational readiness.

7 · Practice

Turn the steps into a usable skill

First session

  1. Provider assesses fit and route without load.
  2. Pack and weigh the selected load and rehearse on/off transitions.
  3. Walk a short low-load segment with a checkpoint.
  4. After review, complete the provider-selected route or stop earlier under the rule.
  5. Remove the pack and record gait, symptoms, skin/feet and recovery.

Repeat plan

The provider changes only load, distance, pace, terrain or distribution at one time and sets rest and frequency. Occupational, heat, hill and stair carriage require separate assessment; there is no universal percentage-body-mass progression.

Progress when

  • Pack fit and distribution remain stable at every checkpoint.
  • Route and pace are completed without worsening gait, balance, pain or skin signs.
  • Recovery and next-day response meet the provider's rule.

Do not progress when

  • A higher load or distance causes gait change, hot spots, numbness, pain or unusual breathlessness.
  • The learner must remove an aid, change route or hide an adjustment to meet the target.
  • The pack, surface, footwear, weather or assistance cannot be reproduced.

8 · Check the result

Measure what changed

Time and physiological/task cost for one declared load-route configuration

How: Record complete pack mass, distribution, route, terrain, pace, footwear, aid, assistance, symptoms, gait and post-task recovery; split data at any change.

Good result: The same configuration is completed with stable or improved time/cost and no worse gait, pain, skin, balance or recovery.

This does not prove: It does not prove a safe maximum load, occupational or military readiness, fracture safety or transfer to hills/heat.

Self-check

Accessibility and adaptations

  • Keep the usual mobility aid and use a provider-selected pack, wheeled carrier or distributed-load alternative with separate measurement.
  • Use seated fitting, a helper, large strap pulls and planned rest/transfer surfaces.
  • Label pack components by color or touch and provide fit instructions as photos or narrated checks, while recording helper input and the final strap configuration.
