Generate varied mechanisms before judging solutions

Divergent ideation deliberately expands possible approaches before selection. This lesson uses a harmless cable-reach problem and a category-switch method. The learner establishes an ordinary silent baseline, searches six mechanism categories, marks duplicate mechanisms, delays evaluation and later applies the method to a new benign problem. Idea count, diversity, usefulness and originality stay separate.

1 · Permission and limits

2 · Get ready

Gather what you need and check the starting conditions

What you need

  • Cable-reach brief with fixed function and safety constraints.
  • Six-column sheet labelled attach, contain, guide, counterbalance, retract and signal.
  • Timer, duplicate-mechanism marker and separate later evaluation page.

Before you start

  • State the function: keep a loose cable end reachable without changing the electrical device.
  • List hard constraints: no electrical modification, damage, trip hazard or powered mechanism.
  • Close examples during the baseline and set five minutes for silent generation.

3 · The method

Follow these steps in order

  1. Capture an ordinary baseline

    Generate silently for five minutes on a blank page and number every distinct idea without evaluating it.

    Why: The baseline shows the learner’s default search before strategy cues.

    Check: A timestamped list exists with judgement words crossed out.

  2. Restate function and constraints

    Rewrite what must be achieved and what is forbidden before adding ideas.

    Why: A clear function preserves usefulness while the search expands.

    Check: Every later idea can be checked against the same brief.

  3. Search by mechanism

    Use the six columns and add at least two ideas to each. Describe what physically changes, not just a product noun.

    Why: Category switching reaches different regions of the solution space.

    Check: All six mechanisms have two candidate descriptions.

  4. Reverse one design assumption

    Choose one non-safety assumption, such as “the cable must stay behind the desk,” reverse it and generate three consequences. Never reverse the hard electrical or trip-hazard limits.

    Why: Assumption reversal can open a new search region while the real constraints remain intact.

    Check: Three new ideas trace to the named reversal and still pass every hard constraint.

  5. Break fixation

    Mark repeated mechanisms, hide dominant examples and ask one environment-changing and one need-removing question.

    Why: Surface variety can conceal the same underlying idea.

    Check: At least two ideas use mechanisms absent from the baseline.

  6. Use an incubation return

    Write one unresolved mechanism question, leave the task for a low-demand interval and on return generate for three minutes before rereading the old list.

    Why: A delayed return may loosen fixation, but it must be measured rather than treated as guaranteed insight.

    Check: New-return ideas are marked separately and counted only when they add a mechanism or workable variation.

  7. Cluster without selecting

    Group ideas by mechanism, count distinct categories and flag only hard-constraint violations. Do not rank the survivors yet.

    Why: Clustering measures diversity while keeping convergence separate.

    Check: The sheet reports raw count, category count and duplicates.

  8. Delay and transfer

    After 48 hours, generate on the new problem “keep a bookmark from slipping,” using the same method without rereading the cable ideas first.

    Why: A delayed unfamiliar brief tests method use rather than item memory.

    Check: The new brief has its own count, categories and constraint pass.

Scenario

Jules works on keeping a charging-cable end reachable at a desk.

Walkthrough

  1. His five-minute baseline produces six ideas, four of which are clips.
  2. He applies the six columns and writes a tray, weighted guide, counterweight, spool, bright tag and other options.
  3. He marks three clip variants as one mechanism rather than three categories.
  4. The prompts “change the desk” and “remove the reaching need” produce a built-in channel and front charging point.
  5. Two days later he uses the same category switch on the slipping-bookmark brief.

Result

Jules expands from three baseline mechanisms to six and transfers the search rule to a new brief. The result does not prove originality, value or implementation success.

Turn the steps into a usable skill

First session

  1. Run a five-minute blank baseline.
  2. Generate two ideas in each of six categories.
  3. Mark duplicate mechanisms.
  4. Add environment-changing and need-removing ideas.
  5. Store evaluation for a later session.

Repeat plan

Use one 20-minute session weekly for four weeks on different benign briefs. Delay evaluation until the next day and run a fresh-brief transfer on weeks two and four.

Progress when

  • All six mechanism prompts are attempted on two fresh briefs, with an honest empty mark when a prompt yields no valid idea.
  • Duplicate rate falls while hard-constraint compliance stays high.
  • Every retained candidate names its mechanism, useful function and hard-constraint check.

Do not progress when

  • The task becomes hazardous, regulated or consequential.
  • Idea generation uses confidential or culturally governed material.
  • The learner cannot stop or separate generation from evaluation.

8 · Check the result

Measure what changed

Distinct mechanism count on a new constrained brief.

How: Report raw ideas, unique mechanism clusters, duplicates, hard-constraint violations and independent usefulness ratings; preserve baseline and transfer separately.

Good result: The sheet shows two attempts in each declared search column or an explicit no-valid-idea entry, counts duplicate variants separately and yields at least one constraint-compliant mechanism absent from the initial baseline on a fresh brief. Counts describe the search; they are not a validated creativity pass score.
