Interpret a synthetic hidden-signal packet without mistaking tool use for a new biological sense

This lesson teaches low-stakes quality control for non-human sensing. Interpret a NorthCue packet; check degree units, timestamps plus quality codes; compare four usable headings with references; map misses versus abstentions; reject stale, unitless, LOW-quality or empty records. Nothing here authorises live environmental or navigation decisions.

What you will produceLearner classifies eight NorthCue records, including four unusable entries, then states which findings depend on sensor version, code legend plus 15-degree tolerance.

1 · Permission and limits

Know exactly what you may do

You may

  • Interpret supplied fictional or learner-owned sensor records with an answer key.
  • Compare a visual or tactile code with an ordinary reference in a quiet, harmless desk task.
  • Stop and mark a record unusable when identity, unit, time or quality is missing.

Qualified help is required for

  • Fitting or training an assistive, occupational, clinical or navigation device.
  • Any use in traffic, open water, emergency response, health monitoring or another safety-critical setting.
  • Collection of environmental data that affects other people, protected places or public decisions.

Never do this from the page alone

  • Use the fixture to navigate, diagnose an exposure or decide that a place is safe.
  • Claim biological magnetoreception or a device-off sixth sense from packet accuracy.
  • Collect covert location, body, home or workplace data.

2 · Get ready

Gather what you need and check the starting conditions

What you need

  • Eight supplied NorthCue v1 records: card 1 reads 004 degrees, age 5 seconds, quality OK, reference 000 degrees; card 2 reads 081 degrees, age 8 seconds, quality OK, reference 090 degrees; card 3 reads 198 degrees, age 12 seconds, quality OK, reference 180 degrees; card 4 reads 276 degrees, age 20 seconds, quality OK, reference 270 degrees; card 5 reads 012 degrees but is 45 seconds old; card 6 reads 090 with no unit; card 7 reads 182 degrees with quality LOW; card 8 has no reading. The age limit is 30 seconds and the tolerance is plus or minus 15 degrees.
  • The supplied answer key: absolute errors for cards 1 to 4 are 4, 9, 18 and 6 degrees; cards 1, 2 and 4 pass, card 3 misses, and cards 5 to 8 require abstention for stale age, missing unit, LOW quality and missing value respectively.
  • A two-pattern visual or optional gentle tactile code legend, a timer and a record sheet.

Before you start

  • Use only fictional, public-domain or learner-owned data; do not connect a live sensor.
  • Choose a seated desk task with no navigation, hazard detection or consequential decision.
  • Predeclare the sensor name, mapping version, tolerance, replay limit and the rule: missing unit, time or quality means abstain.

3 · The method

Follow these steps in order

  1. Name the hidden signal

Write an exact signal—magnetic heading in degrees—plus a harmless question this NorthCue packet will answer.

Why: A label such as “environment sense” hides what the device actually measures.

Check: The record names one signal, unit, task and non-use.

  2. Check the sensor identity

Read sensor name, mapping version plus observation time on every card before decoding any value.

Why: A reading from the wrong sensor, mapping or time cannot be compared fairly.

Check: Every card has a matched identity and version or is marked unusable.

  3. Check unit, age and quality

Circle each unit; compare record age with a 30-second limit; note any calibration or LOW-quality flag.

Why: A precise-looking number can still be stale, unitless or flagged.

Check: The stale, unitless and quality-warning cards are not silently treated as valid.

  4. Decode without the answer key

Use a declared code legend once, state inferred heading plus confidence, then lock that answer before revealing its reference.

Why: Locking the answer separates interpretation from copying.

Check: Each valid card has one recorded response, confidence and replay count.

  5. Compare with the reference

Calculate absolute heading error for valid cards and record false alarms, misses and code confusions separately.

Why: An average can hide a repeated left/right or code-pair confusion.

Check: The sheet shows error for each valid card and names each error type.

  6. Test the alternative channel

Decode two matched records through a visual or manual legend instead of an augmented cue; record changed support explicitly.

Why: This reveals whether the result belongs to a specific code or device.

Check: Device/code and alternative-channel results are reported separately.

  7. Make a fit-or-abstain decision

For each card choose fit for this fictional task, unfit, or uncertain, and give the exact reason.

Why: Environmental sensing includes knowing when the data cannot support a decision.

Check: No missing, stale or flagged record receives an unqualified fit decision.

4 · Worked example

See the whole method used once

Scenario

A fictional NorthCue badge produces eight cards. Allowed work asks whether each usable heading falls within 15 degrees of its supplied reference; nobody wears this badge or navigates with it.

Walkthrough

  1. Write “NorthCue v1, degrees, 30-second age limit, ±15° tolerance” on the configuration card.
  2. Mark card 5 stale, card 6 unitless, card 7 quality-flagged and card 8 empty before decoding anything.
  3. Decode cards 1–4 through a code legend, reveal references, then calculate absolute circular errors: 4°, 9°, 18° plus 6°.
  4. Classify cards 1, 2 plus 4 as passes; card 3 as a miss; report three passes, one miss, four reason-labelled abstentions.

Result

Learner separates usable device-on decoding from unusable records plus device-off ability. Findings support only this fictional NorthCue v1 packet under its declared 15-degree tolerance.

5 · Right and wrong

Decoding a heading before checking its unit.Read and circle the unit before decoding; abstain when it is absent.
Treating an expired sensor reading as current.Apply the predeclared age limit to every card rather than only suspicious ones.

7 · Practice

Turn the steps into a usable skill

First session

  1. Review the code legend and metadata rule without attempting a card.
  2. Classify all eight cards for identity, unit, age and quality.
  3. Decode four metadata-valid cards, lock answers, then score each against its reference.
  4. Repeat only the largest code confusion on two matched new cards.
  5. Finish with two alternative-channel cards and a fit-or-abstain summary.

Repeat plan

Use one new eight-card fictional packet after at least 48 hours. Keep the same mapping and tolerance for the first retest; then vary only the packet. Stop after 12 total cue presentations or sooner if sensory discomfort, guessing or answer memorisation appears.

Progress when

  • All unusable records are identified before the answer key is opened.
  • At least four of five valid cards meet the declared tolerance on a novel packet.
  • The learner can name the sensor, mapping and support whenever stating the result.

Do not progress when

  • Missing metadata is being guessed rather than marked unusable.
  • Accuracy requires unlimited replay or looking at the reference.
  • The proposed next task involves live navigation, health, public safety or third-party data.

8 · Check the result

Measure what changed

Versioned fictional-packet interpretation accuracy and data-quality abstention

How: Score valid-card error against the locked reference; count metadata defects found before decoding, replays, false alarms, misses and alternative-channel results.

Good result: A good result finds every planted metadata defect and meets the declared tolerance on at least four of five novel valid cards without extra replays.

This does not prove: It does not prove a new biological sense, device-off retention, real-world navigation, sensor validity or safety-critical transfer.

Self-check

  • Can you point to the sensor identity, unit, time and quality state for every accepted record?
  • Can you explain one false alarm and one blind spot without calling either a biological failure?
  • Can you state what changed in the alternative-channel comparison?
  • Can you name a situation in which abstaining is the correct sensing result?

9 · Stop, adapt or get help

Keep the safety boundary practical

Stop and get help

  • Stop for skin irritation, headache, dizziness, nausea, sensory overload or marked distress from any optional cue.
  • Stop if the exercise drifts toward live navigation, hazard detection or a claim about health or safety.
  • Stop and obtain the data owner or qualified authority when records concern other people, protected places or real decisions.

Accessibility and adaptations

  • Use the visual pulse strip, text label or spoken label instead of vibration; alternative channels are valid supports.
  • Increase text and symbol size, allow keyboard entry and extend response time without changing the reference tolerance.
  • Reduce the code to two patterns and provide a rest break; do not raise vibration intensity as progression.

10 · Evidence and limits

Why these instructions are here

  1. primary research

Long-term use of a tactile compass can support learning of a particular sensorimotor mapping, but the demonstrated capability remains tied to the augmentation configuration.

Learning New Sensorimotor Contingencies: Effects of Long-Term Use of Sensory Augmentation on the Brain and Conscious Perception
  2. primary research

Sensory-augmentation studies can measure task-specific spatial learning; they do not establish biological receptor growth or safe independent navigation.

Improved Spatial Knowledge Acquisition through Sensory Augmentation

Limits

  • The fixture uses synthetic data and cannot validate a live sensor.
  • Success belongs to the person–code–packet configuration and may disappear after any version change.
  • No result authorises safety, environmental, clinical or navigation decisions.
  • Learning a sensor mapping does not establish a new biological receptor or safe independent navigation.
  • No durable device-off sensory capability or safety-critical independent-navigation transfer has been established; group/exposure confounding remains.
