Section 38 of 440
PART 2: THE SUPERPOWERS
2.21 RELATIONAL FITNESS & DURABLE BONDS
Relationships may benefit from deliberate maintenance, but needs, frequency, privacy and reciprocity differ. This section offers reflection prompts rather than a universal social prescription.
Optional relationship map
• Identify the people and communities that matter, the kind of contact each relationship can realistically sustain, and any accessibility, safety or cultural constraints. No fixed circle size is required.
• Agree or test a cadence that feels welcome to both parties. Weekly, monthly or occasional contact are examples, not standards of closeness.
• Consider whether at least one trusted person has enough current information to offer meaningful support. Disclosure is voluntary and should remain proportionate and safe.
• Give and request support clearly, while respecting capacity and consent. Asking for help can be useful but is not automatically easier or relationship-deepening.
• Preserve some contact that is not transactional where that matters to the relationship.
• When loneliness or drift is present, a small invitation may be worth trying if it is safe and welcome. No mechanical “always initiate” rule applies.
• Repair small ruptures inside a day or two. The friendship-ending fight is rare; the unaddressed small offense that cools contact for a decade is common. "That sat wrong with me — can we look at it?" costs thirty seconds of awkwardness against years of drift.
• Build rituals. Standing calls, annual trips, a recurring table. Rituals remove the scheduling negotiation that kills most adult friendship.
• Diversify. One person carrying your entire emotional load is a single point of failure — unfair to them, fragile for you.
The crisis test, twice a year: who could you call at 3 a.m., and — the half people forget — who would call you? If either list is thin, that is a finding, and this section is the training plan. Section 2.14’s warning applies here too: if an AI has become the entity that knows you best, treat that as a signal to invest in the humans on this map.
