Scoring rule
Classify a wrong answer by its position: switch error if it occurs at 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, or 11; repeat error if it occurs at 2, 4, 8, or 12; preserve start-position errors separately.; Blocked mean time per item = combined blocked time / 12.; Mixed mean time per item = mixed-set time / 12.; Descriptive mixed cost = mixed mean time per item - blocked mean time per item. Report support and accuracy beside it.
Worked example
- Blocked A takes 12.0 seconds with 6/6 correct; blocked B takes 15.0 seconds with 6/6 correct.
- Combined blocked time is 12.0 + 15.0 = 27.0 seconds for 12 items, so blocked mean = 27.0 / 12 = 2.25 seconds per item.
- Mixed Set 1 takes 42.0 seconds and has errors at switch positions 3, 6, and 10: accuracy = 9/12 = 75.0%; mixed mean = 42.0 / 12 = 3.50 seconds per item.
- Mixed Set 1 descriptive cost = 3.50 - 2.25 = 1.25 seconds per item.
- With deliberate rule naming at each switch, Mixed Set 2 takes 45.0 seconds and has one error at switch position 7: accuracy = 11/12 = 91.7%; mixed mean = 45.0 / 12 = 3.75 seconds per item.
- Mixed Set 2 descriptive cost = 3.75 - 2.25 = 1.50 seconds per item. Accuracy rises by 2 correct items while the time cost rises by 0.25 seconds per item.
