Learn and apply an eight-term fictional museum codebook

This self-guided pack uses eight invented museum terms so every fact has a stable answer and no prior expertise is needed. First test the terms before studying. Then retrieve each definition, check the supplied answer immediately, and answer a simple application question. A delayed T+3-day test is included as this pack’s declared interval; it is an example configuration, not a universal schedule. Text, audio, enlarged cards and external memory aids are valid when declared. The score measures retention and application of this small fictional codebook. It does not establish expertise, judgment, intelligence, clinical memory health or the ability to apply real museum rules. Never use remembered material from this pack for medication, legal, safety or other high-stakes decisions. Stop if tracking becomes distressing or compulsive, and route concerning memory or learning difficulty affecting daily function to an appropriate professional.

Authority and safety

  • Use only the bounded configuration. Use neutral educational material with a known answer key. Supports, alternate formats and smaller sets are valid.
  • Stop if the frame becomes a study schedule, repeated recall loop, memory score or competence test.
  • Do not use remembered facts to make medication, clinical, legal or other high-stakes decisions.

Exact materials

  • Eight prompt cards from the fixture, with the invented term on the front and its exact definition plus application answer on the back.
  • Baseline and delayed-test sheet with two boxes per card: definition response and application response.
  • Feedback card printed: ‘Attempt first; check immediately; write the corrected answer once; do not copy it repeatedly.’
  • Schedule card printed: ‘T0 baseline and one retrieval round; after another neutral activity, one mixed retrieval round; T+3 days, delayed test before restudy.’
  • A timer only to mark the end of a comfortable short round, not to score speed; keyboard, audio, AAC, plain language and assistance may be declared.
  • Boundary card: fictional facts only; no high-stakes use; factual recall is not judgment or expertise.

Set up in this order

  1. Label the cards M1–M8 and keep every answer back hidden. Record the presentation language, assistance and the declared delayed-test date before starting.
  2. Run the T0 baseline: for each term, attempt the definition and application question once. Mark responses without teaching or guessing repeatedly.
  3. Study each answer once. Then shuffle the eight terms, retrieve definition and application before turning each card over, and write one correction when needed.
  4. Complete another unrelated neutral activity before one mixed retrieval round. Do not add cards, streaks or extra daily duration.
  5. At T+3 days, test all eight terms in a new mixed order before any restudy. Declare any cue, aid or answer options used.
  6. Score definition and application separately, compare with baseline, record burden, and keep or retire only the facts that serve this exercise.

Scoring rule

For each of eight cards, award 1 point for a definition that preserves the complete keyed meaning and 1 point for the keyed application answer. Baseline and T+3-day totals are each out of 16; also report definition/8 and application/8. No half points and no speed bonus. The descriptive gain is delayed total minus baseline total. If an answer choice, cue or external aid is used, score accuracy normally but label the result supported. A useful outcome is accurate delayed retrieval or appropriate application with acceptable burden; there is no expertise threshold and no universal spacing claim.

Worked example

  1. At baseline, a fictional learner gives complete definitions for ARDO, DOVA and FARO: 3 definition points. The learner correctly applies ARDO and DOVA: 2 application points. Baseline is therefore 3 + 2 = 5/16.
  2. The learner completes one attempt-feedback round, writing each correction once, and later completes one mixed retrieval round without adding new cards.
  3. At T+3 days, seven definitions are complete; CERIN is recalled only as ‘a blue tag,’ so it earns 0 because staff-only handling is missing. Definition score is 7/8.
  4. Six applications are correct. CERIN is wrongly answered ‘yes,’ and HIRA is confused with FARO, so application score is 6/8.
  5. The delayed total is 7 + 6 = 13/16. The descriptive change is 13 − 5 = +8 points, with the same declared text format and burden of 2/5.

Correct result: The learner moves from 5/16 at baseline to 13/16 after the declared delay, a +8-point change for this fictional codebook. CERIN needs correction; the result does not prove expertise, general judgment or memory health.

Right and wrong

Starting a cardAttempt the definition before turning the card over.Read the answer repeatedly and call familiarity retrieval. An answer-first exposure cannot measure attempted recall.

Prior knowledge is studied before baseline.Attempt all sixteen baseline points before exposing any answer backs.
A partial cue is scored as the full definition.Use the complete-meaning rule in the answer key and give 0 when a distinguishing function is missing.
Application errors are silently counted as definition errors.Maintain two separate eight-point subtotals.
The delayed test follows a warm-up review.Test before restudy at T+3 days and record any accidental exposure.
The fictional rules are applied at a real museum.Keep them inside the invented Larkspur exercise and follow actual venue instructions in real settings.

Evidence boundary

What the tutorial may—and may not—claim.

Supportable claim

Structured retrieval can strengthen retention of selected facts and concepts, including for older learners.

Measurement boundary

Declare content validity, language, prior knowledge, cueing, error correction, delay, application test and assistance; factual recall does not establish judgment.

Myth

Download expert knowledge

Metric

Accurate recall and appropriate application of declared content after delay

Boundary

Retention of facts does not prove expertise, wisdom or transfer to unrelated domains.

Negative and limiting findings

  • No retrieval schedule was universally best across delays.
  • Remembering medication facts did not establish safe prescribing or clinical competence.

Prohibited wording

  • download knowledge
  • learn anything instantly
  • unlimited knowledge
  • memory score proves expertise

Label the cards M1–M8 and keep every answer back hidden. Record the presentation language, assistance and the declared delayed-test date before starting.

Why this step exists

“Label the cards M1–M8 and keep every answer back hidden” creates the auditable value, condition or statement needed for the tutorial’s later comparison and conclusion.

Success check

A legible entry directly completes “Label the cards M1–M8 and keep every answer back hidden” and records the requested condition, decision or boundary without adding a new claim.
