Compare visibility across dim display panels without entering real darkness

Dark adaptation is a temporary physiological process, not a permanent superpower, and recent bright light changes it. This safe fixture keeps the room navigable and dims only a set of fixed screen panels. The learner identifies simple shapes at declared display-grey levels after a matched light-history interval and resets after an accidental bright screen. It is not a rod threshold or night-driving test.

1 · Permission and limits

Know exactly what you may do

You may

  • After the fixed 15-minute ordinary-room-light history, identify circle, triangle, square or star on Set A from level 1 through 6 at locked brightness.
  • Record shape answers, confidence and interruptions, reset for five minutes after accidental bright light and repeat concealed Set B later.
  • Use ordinary correction and accessible four-choice symbols without entering a dark walking environment.

Qualified help is required for

  • Assessing new night-vision difficulty, delayed dark adaptation, eye disease, medication effects or unequal vision between eyes.
  • Decisions about night driving, dark stairs/routes, occupational night work or mobility safety.
  • Changing eye treatment, lenses, medication, illumination aids or rehabilitation from a home panel result.

2 · Get ready

Gather what you need and check the starting conditions

What you need

  • An exact panel recipe for a helper using a slide or drawing program. Make every panel 8 cm square with background RGB 16/16/16 and one centred 4 cm shape: circle, equilateral triangle, square or five-point star. Shape grey levels are 1 = 112, 2 = 80, 3 = 56, 4 = 40, 5 = 32 and 6 = 24 in all three RGB channels. Export one of each shape at every level under neutral filenames. Fold the Set A order by level: 1 circle/triangle/square/star; 2 star/square/circle/triangle; 3 triangle/circle/star/square; 4 square/star/triangle/circle; 5 circle/star/square/triangle; 6 triangle/square/star/circle. Set B uses at each level: 1 star/circle/triangle/square; 2 triangle/star/square/circle; 3 square/triangle/circle/star; 4 circle/square/star/triangle; 5 star/triangle/circle/square; 6 square/circle/triangle/star.
  • One non-HDR display with brightness locked.
  • A normally lit room and fixed viewing distance.
  • Timer and record for prior light, panel level, accuracy, confidence and symptoms.

Before you start

  • Keep the room safely lit enough to move; remain seated.
  • Do not walk in darkness, drive, cover hazards or use extreme bright-light exposure.
  • Spend and record 15 minutes under the same ordinary room lamp with no full-screen white display before either set; this fixture standardises recent light but does not create clinical dark adaptation.
  • Use professional care for new night-vision difficulty.

3 · The method

Follow these steps in order

  1. Make the room safe

    Remove trip hazards and keep navigation lighting on; only the panel is dim.

    Why: The lesson tests an image, not movement in darkness.

    Check: The route remains fully visible.

  2. Lock display and history

    Record display, brightness, room light, distance and the prior-light interval.

    Why: Display luminance and recent bright light strongly affect the result.

    Check: The same history rule can be repeated.

  3. Learn the object set

    View clear versions of the allowed silhouettes and response labels.

    Why: The task should test visibility, not vocabulary.

    Check: All clear objects are identified.

  4. Begin with visible panels

    Identify each object and confidence before checking, starting above the difficult level.

    Why: A visible start establishes the task without prolonged staring.

    Check: The first panels are answered without strain.

  5. Step down one level

    Move through fixed brightness/contrast levels without changing display controls or leaning closer.

    Why: Manual adjustment destroys the physical comparison.

  8. Reset after a light interruption

    If a notification flash, bright display menu, window glare or room-light change occurs, stop the panel sequence. Restore the original settings, sit under the original room lamp for five minutes, then begin with a new panel rather than the interrupted one.

    Why: A brief bright exposure can alter temporary visibility and make the next low-level panel incomparable with earlier trials.

Scenario

Noah uses a laptop with brightness locked and a room lamp left on.

Walkthrough

  1. Noah clears the seated area and records the prior 15 minutes indoors.
  2. He learns four clear silhouettes at 70 cm.
  3. He answers fixed dim panels before feedback without altering brightness.
  4. He stops after the declared repeated-error rule and records no symptoms.
  5. On another day he repeats novel objects after the same light-history interval.
  6. A bright notification appears before panel six, so Noah closes it, restores the locked display, waits the full reset interval and resumes with a replacement silhouette.

Result

Noah becomes more consistent at this display task. The result is not physiological dark adaptation, scotopic threshold or safe night vision. The reset log shows that the second-day comparison used a matched recent-light state rather than an unrecorded screen flash.

7 · Practice

Turn the steps into a usable skill

First session

  1. A helper builds all 24 panels at the six RGB levels and prepares concealed A and B orders from the folded key.
  2. Secure a safely lit seated setup, lock display mode/brightness and 70 cm distance, and complete the 15-minute ordinary-room-light history.
  3. Practise the four shapes at level 1, then run Set A from level 1 through 6 with one shape answer and confidence before feedback.
  4. If any bright interruption occurs, log it, complete the five-minute original-lamp reset and resume on an unused panel; otherwise finish at level 6 or a symptom stop.
  5. After at least 48 hours, repeat the 15-minute light history and run concealed Set B at identical settings.

Repeat plan

Use one short panel set no more than twice weekly. Progress only by novel-item accuracy at identical settings; do not make the room darker as progression.

Progress when

  • Novel-panel accuracy improves at matched levels.
  • Confidence becomes calibrated.
  • No staring, display changes or symptoms occur.

Do not progress when

  • Prior light or display cannot be matched.
  • Night-vision difficulty affects daily function.

8 · Check the result

Measure what changed

Circle/triangle/square/star identification across the six supplied dark-panel grey levels

How: Record correct object identification and confidence by declared panel level, plus prior light, display settings, distance and symptoms. Include the number and timing of light interruptions and exclude any panel attempted before the full reset interval.

Good result: Both concealed sets reproduce from their keys, every interruption triggers the five-minute reset and level-by-level accuracy is reported without symptoms or display adjustment. The result remains a lit-room panel comparison, not a scotopic threshold.

This does not prove: Use rod/cone recovery curves or declared low-luminance thresholds after standardised bleach and adaptation; do not use subjective confidence or a daytime chart.
