PART 2: THE SUPERPOWERS
2.20 PLAY, WONDER & QUALITY-OF-LIFE ENGINEERING
Read this book carelessly and you will build a life that is all maintenance: train, measure, recover, produce, repeat. Impressive, optimized — and joyless in a way no metric will catch until it is severe. This section exists because enjoyment is not the reward for a well-run life. It is a load-bearing component of one.
Play may be chosen primarily for enjoyment rather than productivity. A person may also enjoy goals, skill or public sharing; those features do not automatically turn play into work. The relevant question is whether the activity remains freely chosen and restorative rather than compulsory or burdensome.
The Practice
• Recover a dead hobby. List what absorbed you at ten, at sixteen, at twenty-five. Pick one and do it this week at whatever skill level remains — badly, happily, off the record.
• Schedule unmonetized play like training. Two blocks a week, protected like appointments, exempt from tracking. This is one of the places section 4.8’s "when not to track" rule is mandatory: leave the devices at home on purpose.
• Wonder is optional, not a deficit to repair. Novel or absorbing experiences may refresh attention for some people; choose accessible activities that are welcome rather than treating awe as a renewable resource everyone should schedule.
• Take adventures without performance goals. A hike with no pace target. A trip with no itinerary optimization. Company with no networking value. The point is the texture, not the throughput.
• Audit the calendar for enjoyment now. Deferred-life thinking — grind now, live later — fails actuarially and psychologically. Somewhere in every week should be things you would defend not because they build anything, but because they are good.
THE PRINCIPLE: The optimized life has to be worth living while it is being optimized. If your system produces a person with flawless metrics and no delight, the system has a defect — and this section is the patch.
