PART 2: THE SUPERPOWERS
2.27 FRAUD AND MANIPULATION RESISTANCE
Epistemic discernment elsewhere in this book is about evaluating claims. Fraud resistance is a different capability because fraud does not target your reasoning. It targets urgency, authority, fear and affection, and it works on intelligent, careful people precisely by moving them out of the state in which they reason well.
The main patterns: impersonation of a bank, tax authority, police force or delivery company; payment fraud in which you are persuaded to transfer money yourself; romance and long-confidence approaches; investment and cryptocurrency offers; impersonation of a family member in difficulty; and fake technical support.
One change deserves specific attention. Voice cloning from short samples is now straightforward, and a distressed call from a family member's voice is no longer evidence that it is them. This removes a check most people have relied on their whole lives. Agree a verification phrase with your family now, before you need it.
Urgency is the signal. Legitimate institutions do not require an irreversible decision in the next few minutes. Manufactured time pressure is the mechanism, and recognising it is worth more than recognising any particular scam.
Never verify through the channel that contacted you. Hang up, wait, and use a number or address you obtained independently. A caller who objects to this is telling you what they are.
Use a second person for any large or unusual transfer. Not for their expertise — simply because saying it aloud to someone who is not in the emotional state you are in breaks the frame.
No legitimate organisation asks you to move money to keep it safe, to buy vouchers, or to conceal a transaction from your bank.
Finally, the part that does the most damage. Shame keeps people silent, and silence prevents reporting, recovery and warning others. Being defrauded is the outcome of a professional operation designed by people who do this full time. If it happens, report it immediately to your bank and to the appropriate authority, and tell someone. The speed of reporting materially affects whether money is recoverable, and the delay is almost always caused by embarrassment rather than by anything else.
