Repeat a fixed submaximal strength task without hiding form loss

Strength endurance is the ability to preserve force and execution across repeated or sustained muscular work. This lesson teaches a provider-set repetition test with one load, range, cadence and termination rule. The learner completes each repetition to the same standard and stops at the first technical failure; the provider chooses the load, number of attempts, rest and progression.

1 · Permission and limits

Know exactly what you may do

You may

  • Practise the repetition standard and cadence without added load.
  • Perform a provider-set submaximal set while counting only repetitions that meet the rule.
  • Stop voluntarily before failure and report local fatigue separately from breathlessness or pain.

Qualified help is required for

  • Select the task, relative load, cadence, range, cap and recovery after assessment.
  • Decide whether repeated-fatigue testing is appropriate and observe the termination rule.
  • Set progression and distinguish local muscular endurance from cardiorespiratory limitation.

Never do this from the page alone

  • Run an exhaustion, repeated-failure or maximum-repetition test alone.

2 · Get ready

Gather what you need and check the starting conditions

What you need

  • Stable armless chair fixed against a wall or provider-selected resistance station
  • Metronome or recorded cadence
  • Repetition-validity checklist
  • Session log for valid reps, error type, fatigue and recovery

Before you start

  • Agree on the exact start and finish positions and whether hands or aids are allowed.
  • Set the cadence, load, maximum set length and first-failure stop rule in writing.
  • Complete the provider's warm-up and verify that the chair or device cannot move.
  • Distinguish expected local effort from pain, dizziness, chest symptoms or unusual breathlessness.

3 · The method

Follow these steps in order

  1. Define one valid repetition

    From the same seated start, stand to the declared hip and knee extension, then sit under control until the chair supports you. Use only the agreed hand support.

    Why: A repetition count is meaningless if the movement standard drifts.

    Check: Learner and provider score the same two demonstrations as valid or invalid.

  2. Lock the cadence

    Start on the metronome and match one stand and one sit to the agreed beats. Do not begin ahead of the first cue.

    Why: Cadence changes time under tension and fatigue.

    Check: The first three repetitions land on the intended beats.

  3. Keep the range constant

    Reach the same standing marker and controlled seat contact each time; do not hover above the chair or drop onto it.

    Why: Shortening the range can disguise fatigue.

    Check: Each repetition meets both range markers.

  4. Breathe and keep the task local

    Breathe throughout and keep feet in the marked position. Tell the provider if breathlessness, pain or balance rather than local leg fatigue is limiting the set.

    Why: Different limiting systems require different interpretation.

    Check: The learner can name what caused the stop.

  5. Stop at first technical failure

    End the set when one repetition misses cadence, range, control or permitted support, even if another repetition might be forced.

    Why: The endpoint is loss of declared performance, not collapse.

    Check: No unscored extra repetitions occur after the first failure.

  6. Record the valid count and decrement

    Write the number of valid repetitions, elapsed time, first error, perceived local effort and time until ordinary breathing returns.

    Why: The first error explains how endurance failed.

    Check: The log shows the count and the exact stop reason.

  7. Retest only in the same configuration

    Use the same chair height, foot marks, cadence, hand rule and provider-set load. Treat any change as a new test.

    Why: Otherwise a higher count may come from an easier fixture.

    Check: Both session records match on every declared configuration field.

4 · Worked example

See the whole method used once

Scenario

A provider uses a 45-cm chair, arms folded, feet on tape marks and a 3-second stand-sit cycle with a 12-repetition cap.

Walkthrough

  1. The learner and provider score two practice repetitions against the range and cadence rule.
  2. The learner begins on the metronome and completes eight valid repetitions.
  3. Repetition nine reaches standing late but still within the provider's tolerance and is valid.
  4. Repetition ten ends with an uncontrolled drop to the chair, so the set stops immediately.
  5. The log records nine valid repetitions, first failure 'uncontrolled descent', local leg effort 7/10 and normal breathing after 70 seconds.

Result

The score is nine valid repetitions in this chair-and-cadence configuration. It is not ten, and it does not prove occupational endurance or aerobic fitness.

6 · Common mistakes

Spot the error and apply the correction

7 · Practice

Turn the steps into a usable skill

First session

  1. Provider defines and demonstrates one valid repetition.
  2. Practise cadence for four unloaded or assisted repetitions.
  3. Rest fully and complete one submaximal familiarisation set below the cap.
  4. After recovery, complete one scored set using the first-failure rule.
  5. Review the first error and rehearse one corrected repetition only if authorised.

Repeat plan

The provider sets frequency, load, repetition cap, sets and recovery. Repeated-failure training is not supplied. Retest only after recovery and only in the identical configuration.

Progress when

  • Every counted repetition meets range, cadence and support rules.
  • The first-failure point improves without a new compensation.
  • Local fatigue and recovery remain within the provider's agreed range.

Do not progress when

  • The count rises only because cadence, chair height, range or hand support changed.
  • Pain, balance loss or cardiorespiratory symptoms end the set.
  • Technique deteriorates earlier across sessions or recovery is incomplete.

8 · Check the result

Measure what changed

Valid repetitions or sustained time at a fixed submaximal task before the first technical failure

How: Declare load, chair or device, range, cadence, support, repetition cap and stop rule; record valid reps, first error, local effort and recovery.

Good result: The valid count or time improves in the same configuration without earlier form loss, worse symptoms or longer problematic recovery.
