Gather what you need and check the starting conditions
What you need
Eight supplied NorthCue v1 records: card 1 reads 004 degrees, age 5 seconds, quality OK, reference 000 degrees; card 2 reads 081 degrees, age 8 seconds, quality OK, reference 090 degrees; card 3 reads 198 degrees, age 12 seconds, quality OK, reference 180 degrees; card 4 reads 276 degrees, age 20 seconds, quality OK, reference 270 degrees; card 5 reads 012 degrees but is 45 seconds old; card 6 reads 090 with no unit; card 7 reads 182 degrees with quality LOW; card 8 has no reading. The age limit is 30 seconds and the tolerance is plus or minus 15 degrees.
The supplied answer key: absolute errors for cards 1 to 4 are 4, 9, 18 and 6 degrees; cards 1, 2 and 4 pass, card 3 misses, and cards 5 to 8 require abstention for stale age, missing unit, LOW quality and missing value respectively.

4 · Worked example
See the whole method used once
Scenario
A fictional NorthCue badge produces eight cards. Allowed work asks whether each usable heading falls within 15 degrees of its supplied reference; nobody wears this badge or navigates with it.
Walkthrough
Write “NorthCue v1, degrees, 30-second age limit, ±15° tolerance” on the configuration card.
Mark card 5 stale, card 6 unitless, card 7 quality-flagged and card 8 empty before decoding anything.
Decode cards 1–4 through a code legend, reveal references, then calculate absolute circular errors: 4°, 9°, 18° plus 6°.
Classify cards 1, 2 plus 4 as passes; card 3 as a miss; report three passes, one miss, four reason-labelled abstentions.
Result
Learner separates usable device-on decoding from unusable records plus device-off ability. Findings support only this fictional NorthCue v1 packet under its declared 15-degree tolerance.

7 · Practice
Turn the steps into a usable skill
First session
Review the code legend and metadata rule without attempting a card.
Classify all eight cards for identity, unit, age and quality.
Decode four metadata-valid cards, lock answers, then score each against its reference.
Repeat only the largest code confusion on two matched new cards.
Finish with two alternative-channel cards and a fit-or-abstain summary.
Repeat plan
Use one new eight-card fictional packet after at least 48 hours. Keep the same mapping and tolerance for the first retest; then vary only the packet. Stop after 12 total cue presentations or sooner if sensory discomfort, guessing or answer memorisation appears.
Progress when
All unusable records are identified before the answer key is opened.
At least four of five valid cards meet the declared tolerance on a novel packet.

8 · Check the result
Measure what changed
Versioned fictional-packet interpretation accuracy and data-quality abstention
How: Score valid-card error against the locked reference; count metadata defects found before decoding, replays, false alarms, misses and alternative-channel results.
Good result: A good result finds every planted metadata defect and meets the declared tolerance on at least four of five novel valid cards without extra replays.
