No normative target is supplied, and more range is not assumed to be better. Authority and safety

  • Use only the bounded configuration. Use a diagram, imagined example, or an ordinary movement already known to be comfortable and permitted. Do not add force, load, stretching or a new range challenge.
  • Stop if the frame is being converted into stretching, loading, pain-testing or a self-assessment of injury.
  • Stop if comparison with a normative body ideal creates pain, distress or pressure to attempt movement.

  • Boundary card: diagram/no-attempt route; no stretching time, repetitions, weekly frequency, target angle, loading or progression.

Set up in this order

  1. Select the no-movement route and write FICTIONAL/EXISTING RECORD ONLY at the top of the sheet.
  2. For each row, name one joint and one direction. Reject vague labels such as whole-body flexibility.
  3. Classify ACTIVE when the person produces the movement without movement assistance; ACTIVE_ASSISTED when the person contributes while a support helps produce motion; PASSIVE when an external person or device produces the motion while the person remains relaxed; and UNKNOWN when the producer is not recorded.
  4. Copy posture, aid and support exactly. A seated supported observation is a different configuration from standing or unsupported movement.

Scoring rule

Score each case out of 6: joint/direction, exact ACTIVE/ACTIVE_ASSISTED/PASSIVE/UNKNOWN class, support, bounded observation, separate function and responsible next action. Total 24; passing requires R1 ACTIVE_ASSISTED, R2 PASSIVE, R3 ACTIVE and R4 UNKNOWN. Any movement instruction or universal target receives STOP.

Worked example

  1. A learner first writes, ‘R3 has only eight degrees, so ankle flexibility is poor and should be stretched.’
  2. They repair the classification: R3 is an existing active dorsiflexion observation in a seated setup with the usual brace.
  3. They separate task function: the fictional person placed the foot on a low footrest with the shoe and brace.
  4. They list unknown gait, tissue health, unbraced performance, repeatability and whether another setup would produce the same value.
  5. They choose KEEP AS A BOUNDED EXISTING RECORD; no movement, stretching target or progression is proposed.

Correct result: The repaired R3 answer earns 6/6. It preserves active movement, setup, support, task and uncertainty without turning eight degrees into a body judgement or programme.
