Audit a fictional nap-or-rest record and make a safe next-step decision
This tutorial teaches how to read a completed fictional nap-or-quiet-rest record. You will check the safety gate, reconstruct what was actually done, separate immediate change from grogginess and later sleep cost, and choose a cautious next-step label. You will not take a nap, change a sleep schedule, test alertness for driving or copy a duration. The lesson is a record-analysis and decision-safety method only.

Authority and safety
Governance ceiling: explanation and static fictional record analysis only. Capability self-practice, live administration, protocol delivery and efficacy claims are not authorised until the recorded next_gate adjudication changes.
Use only the supplied fictional sleep/rest records. Do not nap, schedule rest, change sleep, take a substance or copy any recorded duration.
A benign task cannot clear driving or hazardous work; dangerous sleepiness or concerning sleep/mood features require an appropriate safe or qualified route.
Exact materials
The three completed fictional records below
A four-column audit sheet: safety gate, configuration, immediate result, later cost
The decision labels STOP AND MAKE SAFE, INSUFFICIENT RECORD, BOUNDED REVIEW and SEEK QUALIFIED ASSESSMENT
The staged answer key, kept closed until every decision and reason is written
Set up in this order
Write STATIC RECORD ANALYSIS ONLY at the top of the sheet. Do not plan or perform sleep, rest or alertness testing.
Read the safety context first. Mark STOP AND MAKE SAFE when the record includes dangerous sleepiness, an approaching safety-critical duty or a conflicting clinical plan.
Reconstruct the configuration exactly: nap or quiet rest, time in bed, estimated sleep if known, end cue, prior sleep opportunity and any support. Write UNKNOWN instead of guessing.
Keep time in bed separate from estimated sleep. The two values are not interchangeable.
Separate the immediate record into task change, burden, grogginess and time until ordinary alertness. One better task score does not erase grogginess.
Read the later record separately: bedtime, sleep onset, nighttime sleep, mood, symptoms and next-day function. Do not merge immediate and later outcomes into one score.
Choose one decision label and cite the exact facts that support it. BOUNDED REVIEW means the fictional record is coherent enough for qualified review; it is not permission to repeat the nap.
Finish with two non-claims: no universal duration and no clearance for driving, treatment or schedule change.
Supplied fixture
Completed fictional sleep/rest records. Analyse them; do not reproduce any configuration.
Case
Safety context
Recorded configuration
Immediate record
Later record
N1
Severe sleepiness; planned motorway drive in 45 minutes; no alternative transport recorded
A nap was being considered, but no interval or end cue was selected
No result
No result
N2
No safety-critical duty; no conflicting plan recorded
Quiet rest; 20 minutes in a chair; alarm used; no sleep reported
Symbol check 7/10 before and 8/10 after; burden 5/10 to 3/10; no grogginess
Usual bedtime and sleep onset; no new symptom recorded
N3
No safety-critical duty; existing clinician-agreed nap plan noted
27 minutes in bed; estimated 18 minutes asleep; two end cues
Symbol check 7/10 before and 8/10 after; grogginess 7/10; ordinary alertness returned after 34 minutes
Sleep onset was 75 minutes later than the person's recorded usual time; no other cause established
Check your work only after you finish
Lock every response first. The checking page is separate so the answers are not exposed inside this exercise.
For each case award 1 point for the safety decision, 1 for preserving the exact configuration, 1 for separating immediate benefit from grogginess, 1 for separating later cost, and 1 for a bounded non-claim: 15 points total. Passing requires N1 stopped, N3 not labelled an uncomplicated success, and no duration or driving recommendation. This scores record analysis, not a person's sleep.
Worked example
Read N3's authority field first: the interval came from an existing clinician-agreed plan, not from this tutorial.
Write the configuration as 27 minutes in bed and an estimated 18 minutes asleep. Do not call them the same duration.
Record the immediate changes separately: one additional symbol correct, burden not supplied, grogginess 7/10 and 34 minutes until ordinary alertness.
Record the later observation separately: sleep onset was 75 minutes later than the fictional usual value, with causation unresolved.
Choose PAUSE/QUALIFIED REVIEW and write that neither the immediate change nor the later observation proves a general nap effect.
Correct result: N3 is a coherent but mixed fictional record. The correct method preserves the plan source, grogginess, recovery time and later cost; it does not tell anyone to reproduce the interval.
Right and wrong
Right and wrong comparison
Moment
Right / safer
Wrong / riskier
Why
Reading a duration
Call it a historical value in this fictional configuration.
Copy 20 or 27 minutes as the correct nap length.
The dataset supplies no universal dose or personal recommendation.
Safety-critical duty
Stop the analysis path and choose a safe alternative for the fictional duty.
Use a symbol score to decide whether driving is safe.
A benign task cannot provide safety clearance.
Waking
Keep grogginess and recovery time visible beside task change.
Report only the improved task item.
Selective reporting hides an immediate cost.
Later sleep
Record later onset as an observation with causation unresolved.
Declare that the nap caused insomnia from one row.
A single uncontrolled record cannot establish cause.
Authority
Limit the output to a record-audit decision.
Turn the record into a personal sleep schedule.
Guide permission is not ready.
Common mistakes and fixes
Common mistakes and corrections
Mistake
Fix
Time in bed is copied into the estimated-sleep field.
Keep both values and write UNKNOWN when sleep is uncertain.
A better immediate score is called successful recovery.
Report task, burden, grogginess, recovery time and later effects separately.
The fictional interval becomes advice.
Label every duration descriptive-only and make no reproduction instruction.
A dangerous-duty record continues to scoring.
Stop at the safety gate and record the safe-alternative requirement.
Evidence boundary
What the tutorial may—and may not—claim.
Supportable claim
Naps can improve subjective alertness and selected outcomes, but effects vary by timing, duration and endpoint.
Measurement boundary
Sleep achieved, timing, prior sleep, inertia, vigilance and the target task must all be measured; planned time in bed is not nap sleep.
Myth
Take the perfect power nap and fully recharge
Metric
Polysomnographic sleep, post-wake inertia, vigilance and target-task performance
Boundary
Feeling better does not certify safe or fully restored performance.
Negative and limiting findings
Processing speed did not improve and only one tested nap condition improved memory encoding.

Write STATIC RECORD ANALYSIS ONLY at the top of the sheet. Do not plan or perform sleep, rest or alertness testing.
Why this step exists
“Write STATIC RECORD ANALYSIS ONLY at the top of the sheet” creates the auditable value, condition or statement needed for the tutorial’s later comparison and conclusion.
Success check
A legible entry directly completes “Write STATIC RECORD ANALYSIS ONLY at the top of the sheet” and records the requested condition, decision or boundary without adding a new claim.
