This lesson teaches deliberate cognitive offloading. You will decide what may be delegated to a checklist or reminder, capture an unaided baseline, design a clear cue, test normal use and one failure, then run a delayed support-off comparison. The aim is reliable configured performance, not maximum device dependence or forced unaided memory.

Gather what you need and check the starting conditions

What you need

  • Three supplied matched six-item lists and their object cards. List A: notebook, pencil, name card, water bottle, charger card, agenda card. List B: folder, pen, badge, water cup, cable card, schedule card. List C: writing pad, marker, pass, flask, adapter card, programme card. A deliberate ambiguous replacement card says 'power item'; the dated source list resolves it to 'charger card'.
  • A paper or local private checklist with tick boxes and one deliberate ambiguous-cue card.
  • Timer, miss/duplicate log, checking count and burden scale.

Before you start

  • Choose a task where a miss has no real consequence; never use medicines, appointments, appliances or emergency items.
  • Decide which outcome matters: complete packing, later recall, or both; keep the scores separate.
  • Set a manual fallback and the rule that ambiguous or stale cues are checked before action.

3 · The method

Follow these steps in order

  2. Capture unaided baseline

    Read list A once, hide it and pack from memory without prompts; record correct, missed, duplicate and extra items.

  3. Build a clear checklist

Scenario

A learner packs six fictional meeting supplies: notebook, pencil, name card, water bottle, charger card and agenda card.

Walkthrough

  1. On list A, the learner recalls four of six and adds one extra object.
  2. They build list B with one item per line and tick only after placement, completing six of six with four look-backs.
  3. When “power item” replaces “charger card,” they pause and use the dated source list rather than guessing.
  4. Two days later they recall four of six from matched list C, so they report improved configured completion but no unaided-memory gain.

Result

The checklist produced accurate packing and safe failure handling, while delayed recall stayed at baseline. That is a useful person-plus-list result, not internal memory training.

7 · Practice

Turn the steps into a usable skill

First session

  1. Classify six fictional items by internal, offloaded or verified route.

  5. Schedule the delayed list-C support-off check and write the allocation decision.

Repeat plan

Use the aid on two additional benign tasks over one week, recording completion, look-backs and burden. Retest unaided memory only for information you intentionally want to learn, after at least 48 hours and with matched new material.

Progress when

Measure what changed

How: Count correct, missed, duplicate and extra items, look-backs, time, burden and fallback success for unaided baseline, tool-on task and delayed matched recall.

Good result: The tool-on task has all six correct with no false ticks, failure recovery succeeds, and any delayed recall change is reported without overstating it.
