Learn a six-step paper-packet procedure for accuracy before speed

Procedural learning is acquiring and retaining a sequence of actions in a declared context. This lesson uses a harmless paper-packet task: inspect three cards, put them in a fixed order, align them, clip them, add a label and place the packet in a tray. The learner studies a six-step card, watches one correct model, practises slowly with feedback after each attempt, spaces attempts, then tests the sequence after a delay and with a new card set. Speed is never allowed to hide an omitted or reordered step.

2 · Get ready

Gather what you need and check the starting conditions

What you need

  • Four practice sets of three cards labelled A, B and C
  • One paper clip, blank label and OUT tray per attempt
  • A six-step procedure card and separate answer key
  • Timer and error sheet for order, alignment, clip, label, placement and prompts

Before you start

  • Keep the task consequence-free; cards contain no personal or real business information.
  • Lay out materials in the same positions for acquisition trials.
  • Define each valid step and the error code before timing.
  • Plan a 10-minute delayed test and a different-colour near-transfer set.

3 · The method

Follow these steps in order

  1. Read the whole sequence

    Read: inspect A/B/C; stack A-B-C; align edges; clip top-left; label PACKED; place in OUT. Point to each material.

    Why: A mental map reduces random trial-and-error.

    Check: The learner can name all six steps in order.

  2. Watch one correct model

    Observe one slow demonstration while matching each action to the step card; do not copy a completed packet without seeing order.

    Why: A model links written steps to movements.

    Check: The learner identifies the current step during the demonstration.

  3. Perform slowly with the card

    Complete one packet while looking at the step card as needed. Say each step before doing it.

    Why: Early accuracy builds the intended procedure.

    Check: Every step is correct even if time is long.

  4. Use immediate specific feedback

    Compare with the answer key and mark omitted, reordered, placement or execution errors. Re-do only the incorrect link once.

    After two minutes, assemble a fresh packet; consult the card only after pausing to recall the next step.

    Leave the table for a neutral 10-minute break, then complete one packet without viewing the card; use it only after a recorded prompt request.

    Why: Delayed performance tests retention rather than immediate imitation.

  7. Test near transfer

    Use a new-colour A/B/C set with the same six rules and table layout. Do not call it transfer if labels or rule change.

    Why: A surface change tests whether the method, not a memorised card set, transfers.

    Check: The new set is completed under the same scoring rule.

4 · Worked example

See the whole method used once

Scenario

A learner practises the six-step packet sequence with white cards, then returns after 10 minutes and later uses yellow cards.

Walkthrough

  1. On the first attempt, the learner stacks A-C-B; feedback names one order error and the stack is corrected.
  2. The second attempt is six of six correct in 52 seconds with one glance at the step card.
  3. After 10 minutes, the learner completes six of six in 48 seconds with no prompt.
  4. With yellow cards, the learner completes six of six in 50 seconds, again without a prompt.
  5. The result records accuracy, time and prompts; the initial order error remains in the log.

Result

The learner retained and near-transferred this harmless six-step packet procedure. This does not establish judgment, authorisation or performance in any real regulated procedure.

7 · Practice

Turn the steps into a usable skill

First session

  1. Read and point through the six steps.
  2. Observe one model and complete one card-supported attempt.
  3. Correct the named failed link and rest two minutes.
  4. Complete one reduced-prompt attempt.
  5. Take a 10-minute break, test retention, then use one new-colour set.

Repeat plan

Practise two accurate packets on three non-consecutive days. Start each day with an unprompted delayed test before reviewing the card. After one week, test one new-colour set and retain the same rule; stop when two consecutive accurate attempts occur rather than adding massed volume.

Progress when

  • Two consecutive packets contain all six steps in order.
  • Delayed accuracy remains complete with equal or fewer prompts.
  • The new-colour set is accurate without losing alignment, label or OUT placement.

Do not progress when

  • Speed increases while omissions, order errors or prompts rise.
  • The task gains real personal, workplace, clinical or safety consequence.
  • Fatigue, frustration or motor discomfort changes execution.

8 · Check the result

Measure what changed

Accurate completion of a declared procedure after delay

How: Score each of six steps, order, time and prompts on acquisition, 10-minute delay and new-colour transfer trials.

Good result: Two consecutive delayed trials and one new-colour trial are six of six correct with no increase in prompts; time matters only after accuracy.
