Learn the provider-supervised static-balance method: set, hold and recover

This tutorial teaches one supported static-balance practice. The learner follows the movement and recovery cues. A qualified clinician decides whether practice happens, then chooses the stance, hand support, guarding, maximum hold time, number of attempts and stopping rules. Do not copy the practice alone or remove support to make it harder.

Authority and safety

  • A qualified clinician must review falls, near-falls, dizziness, pain, fatigue, medicines, usual aids and the real-world goal before any standing practice.
  • Use the learner's usual footwear and aid unless the clinician changes them. Keep a fixed rail or clinician-approved support within reach and use close guarding.
  • Stop for dizziness, pain, new weakness or numbness, blurred vision, nausea, unusual breathlessness, a step, an unplanned hand movement, loss of position, the learner's request or the clinician's stop cue.
  • No independent practice, eyes-closed stance, narrowed or one-leg stance, unstable surface, support removal or self-chosen progression is authorised.

Exact materials

  • A qualified clinician who can assess balance and provide close guarding
  • A dry, level floor, fixed support and stable chair for immediate recovery
  • The learner's usual footwear, mobility aid, orthosis or prosthesis
  • A large visual target and a record for setup, stop event, symptoms and next decision

Set up in this order

  1. Get permission first. The clinician writes PRACTISE or NO ATTEMPT. A no-attempt decision ends the physical lesson.
  2. Before standing, write the exact foot position, footwear, aid, hand support, target, guarding, maximum hold time, maximum attempts and stop events.
  3. Place the support where the declared hand can reach it without leaning. Place the chair so the learner can sit without turning or walking.
  4. Stand only on the clinician's cue. Use the written foot and hand positions, look at the target and do not remove support.
  5. Feel both feet, keep the knees comfortable rather than locked, stay tall without stiffening and breathe normally. Hold until the clinician says stop or a stop event occurs.
  6. At the first loss of position, grip the support, step if needed and sit when directed. Safe recovery is correct, not failure.
  7. Sit, report symptoms and record what ended the attempt. Repeat or change the task only after a fresh clinician decision.

Scoring rule

Award 1 point for each fixture phase: 5 points total. All phases and the stop rule must pass. A clinician-declared NO ATTEMPT also counts as correct completion. This is a tutorial check, not a balance or fall-risk score.

Worked example

  1. After reviewing two recent near-falls, the physiotherapist authorises one supported practice.
  2. The physiotherapist writes: usual shoes, comfortable parallel stance, left hand on a fixed rail, large wall target, close guarding, chair behind, a provider-selected maximum time and stop on any step, second-hand contact, symptom, request or cue.
  3. The learner copies the setup, feels both feet, looks at the target and breathes normally without lifting the hand.
  4. When the right foot starts to move, the learner grips the rail, takes the needed step and sits on cue.
  5. The learner reports no symptom and records the step. The clinician keeps the current support rather than progressing it.

Correct result: The set-hold-recover method was completed correctly because the setup stayed unchanged and recovery began at the first stop event. This does not prove independent standing safety or authorise home progression.

Right and wrong

Right and wrong comparison
MomentRight / saferWrong / riskierWhy
StartingWait for the clinician and copy the written setup.Stand early or copy a stance from the example. The safe setup is person- and context-specific.
HoldingFeel both feet, look ahead and breathe normally.Lock the knees, hold the breath and freeze.Small sway is normal; stiffening is not better balance.
SupportKeep the selected hand support and aid.Remove support to improve the time. That changes the task and may increase risk.
RecoveryGrip, step or sit at the first stop event.Fight to stay up for a longer score.Early recovery protects the learner.

Common mistakes and fixes

Common mistakes and corrections
MistakeFix
Standing before support, chair and stop rules are ready.Sit and complete every setup field first.
A foot or hand moves without being recorded.End the attempt and record the first unplanned change.
Using the rail is treated as cheating.Keep and record support as part of the task.
A good attempt triggers a harder stance.Keep the setup and wait for the clinician's next decision.

Evidence boundary

What the tutorial may—and may not—claim.

Supportable claim

Static balance can improve on practiced tasks, but gains often fail to generalize to untrained balance situations.

Measurement boundary

Time, sway or errors in a specified stance establish task performance only, not universal balance or fall immunity.

Myth

Become unshakeable

Metric

Errors or sway in one declared stance

Boundary

One stance cannot establish stability everywhere.

Negative and limiting findings

  • Six weeks of varied balance or power training did not improve two untrained balance tasks.

Prohibited wording

  • Perfect balance
  • Never fall again
  • One-leg stance predicts all mobility
  • Balance boards make anyone stable

Step-by-step learner mode

Each activity includes its success check, a nearby accessible alternative and an “I’m stuck” correction path. Alternatives preserve the target where possible; when they change the task, Titan labels them as related rather than equivalent.

01

Get permission first

Get permission first. The clinician writes PRACTISE or NO ATTEMPT. A no-attempt decision ends the physical lesson.

Why this step exists

“Get permission first” keeps this lesson inside its declared record-analysis boundary and prevents the supplied scenario from being mistaken for physical practice.

Success check

Evidence of completion shows the learner followed this exact instruction without adding an unstated step: “Get permission first. The clinician writes PRACTISE or NO ATTEMPT. A no-attempt decision ends the physical lesson.”

I’m stuck on this step

Reset: Re-read this authored instruction — “Get permission first. The clinician writes PRACTISE or NO ATTEMPT. A no-attempt decision ends the physical lesson.” — and its success check, then attempt only this step.

  1. Possible snag: A good attempt triggers a harder stance.

Correction: Keep the setup and wait for the clinician's next decision.

Stop / get help: The lesson is actionable only with the declared qualified supervision. Stop if the declared configuration cannot be maintained, uncertainty becomes material, adverse effects appear, or qualified authority is required.

02

Before standing, write the exact foot position, footwear, aid, hand support, target,…

Before standing, write the exact foot position, footwear, aid, hand support, target, guarding, maximum hold time, maximum attempts and stop events.

Why this step exists

“Before standing, write the exact foot position, footwear, aid, hand support, target, guarding, maximum hold time, maximum attempts and stop events” fixes the exact Static balance configuration or decision before later observations are compared.

Success check

A legible entry directly completes “Before standing, write the exact foot position, footwear, aid, hand support, target, guarding, maximum hold time, maximum attempts and stop events” and records the requested condition, decision or boundary without adding a new claim.

I’m stuck on this step

Reset: Re-read this authored instruction — “Before standing, write the exact foot position, footwear, aid, hand support, target, guarding, maximum hold time, maximum attempts and stop events.” — and its success check, then attempt only this step.

Place the support where the declared hand can reach it without leaning

Place the support where the declared hand can reach it without leaning. Place the chair so the learner can sit without turning or walking.

Why this step exists

“Place the support where the declared hand can reach it without leaning” fixes the exact Static balance configuration or decision before later observations are compared.

Success check

The learner can verify “Place the support where the declared hand can reach it without leaning” from the declared materials, position or recorded choice before continuing.

I’m stuck on this step

Reset: Re-read this authored instruction — “Place the support where the declared hand can reach it without leaning. Place the chair so the learner can sit without turning or walking.” — and its success check, then attempt only this step.

  1. Possible snag: The result from “Place the support where the declared hand can reach it without leaning. Place the chair so the learner can sit without turning or walking.” does not yet meet this declared check: The learner can verify “Place the support where the declared hand can reach it without leaning” from the declared materials, position or recorded choice before continuing.

Correction: Return to the start of “Place the support where the declared hand can reach it without leaning”, reduce complexity or pace, and repeat only the part needed to satisfy: “The learner can verify “Place the support where the declared hand can reach it without leaning” from the declared materials, position or recorded choice before continuing.”

Stop / get help: The lesson is actionable only with the declared qualified supervision. Stop if the declared configuration cannot be maintained, uncertainty becomes material, adverse effects appear, or qualified authority is required.

04

Stand only on the clinician's cue

Stand only on the clinician's cue. Use the written foot and hand positions, look at the target and do not remove support.

Why this step exists

“Stand only on the clinician's cue” carries the authored Static balance method into a reviewable output without adding an unstated task, dose or claim.

Success check

Evidence of completion shows the learner followed this exact instruction without adding an unstated step: “Stand only on the clinician's cue. Use the written foot and hand positions, look at the target and do not remove support.”

Sit, report symptoms and record what ended the attempt

Sit, report symptoms and record what ended the attempt. Repeat or change the task only after a fresh clinician decision.

Why this step exists

“Sit, report symptoms and record what ended the attempt” creates the auditable value, condition or statement needed for the tutorial’s later comparison and conclusion.

Success check

A legible entry directly completes “Sit, report symptoms and record what ended the attempt” and records the requested condition, decision or boundary without adding a new claim.

I’m stuck on this step
