Pace a declared cycle bout and finish with output still controlled

Aerobic endurance is sustained performance in a declared movement mode, not a single universal fitness trait. This lesson teaches a provider-set cycle-ergometer bout: set the bike consistently, warm up gradually, settle into a target power and cadence, check breathing, symptoms and perceived effort at fixed times, finish without a sprint and cool down. The provider controls clearance, mode, duration, intensity, recovery and whether oxygen-uptake testing is justified.

1 · Permission and limits

Know exactly what you may do

You may

  • Aerobic endurance: Set seat and handlebars to the recorded positions, secure feet as authorised and pedal easily to confirm no reaching or joint pain. Begin at the provider's easy power and raise workload only at the stated times while keeping cadence inside the band.
  • During an authorised attempt, Keep cadence in its band, shoulders relaxed and hands light. Make small resistance or cadence corrections rather than repeated large changes. At the work endpoint, reduce resistance; do not accelerate for a final number unless the protocol specifically requires it.
  • Reproduce saddle, handlebar and pedal settings and log power, cadence, duration, effort, symptoms and recovery without merging them into one endurance score.

Qualified help is required for

  • Review cardiovascular and respiratory status, medication effects, current illness and bike fit before choosing bout intensity or any oxygen-uptake test.
  • Set mode, ergometer fit, power or heart-rate target, cadence band, duration, warm-up, cool-down, monitoring and any VO2 test criteria.
  • Set the ergometer to the recorded fit, hold the prescribed power and cadence from the opening minutes, monitor symptoms and physiological signals and control both termination and cool-down.

2 · Get ready

Gather what you need and check the starting conditions

What you need

  • Calibrated cycle ergometer with recorded seat and handlebar settings
  • Cadence and power display
  • Provider-approved heart-rate or gas-analysis equipment when relevant
  • Perceived-exertion and symptom scale
  • A cycle-endurance log for ergometer model and fit, power, cadence, duration, heart rate when authorised, effort, symptoms, interruptions, cool-down and recovery.

Before you start

  • Tell the provider about chest symptoms, fainting, unusual breathlessness, infection, medication changes and current joint pain.
  • Record the cycle model, seat/handle position, target power, cadence band and planned duration.
  • Check that emergency stop, foot retention and communication signals can be used without delay.
  • Rebuild saddle, handlebar and pedal settings from the fit sheet and pedal easily for a brief check. Continue only if cadence is smooth, the learner is not rocking and no concerning symptom appears.
  • Increase cycle work in planned stages until the target cadence and fit are stable; familiarisation minutes are not added to the measured bout.

3 · The method

Follow these steps in order

  1. Rebuild the same bike fit

    Set seat and handlebars to the recorded positions, secure feet as authorised and pedal easily to confirm no reaching or joint pain.

    Why: Fit changes efficiency and which tissues limit the bout.

    Check: Settings match the sheet and the learner pedals without rocking.

  2. Warm up in stages

    Begin at the provider's easy power and raise workload only at the stated times while keeping cadence inside the band.

    Why: A staged warm-up reveals problems before the work interval.

    Check: Power and cadence rise without symptoms or abrupt breathing change.

  3. Settle into target power

    At the work cue, adjust resistance and cadence until power stays within the target band; do not surge above it to build a buffer.

    Why: Early surges distort sustainable-performance measurement; this preserves the aerobic endurance rule for 'Settle into target power'.

    Check: Power remains in band for the first two minutes.

  4. Hold a repeatable rhythm

    Keep cadence in its band, shoulders relaxed and hands light. Make small resistance or cadence corrections rather than repeated large changes.

    Why: Large oscillations waste effort and change the task.

    Check: Minute averages stay within the declared tolerance.

  5. Report at fixed checkpoints

    At the scheduled minutes, state perceived effort, breathing comfort and any pain while continuing the same workload.

    Why: Symptoms and effort show how the same output is being tolerated.

    Check: Every checkpoint has a complete response without missed warning signs.

  6. Finish without a sprint

    At the work endpoint, reduce resistance; do not accelerate for a final number unless the protocol specifically requires it.

    Why: A finishing sprint changes a constant-power test.

    Check: The final work minute remains inside the same target band.

  7. Cool down and interpret

    Pedal easily for the provider-set time, then dismount only when stable. Record completed time/distance or power and keep VO2, heart rate and symptoms as separate measures.

    Check: The log shows mode-specific output, effort, symptoms and recovery.

4 · Worked example

See the whole method used once

Scenario

An exercise physiologist prescribes 20 minutes at 80 W and 60–70 rpm after a graded warm-up on a calibrated cycle.

Walkthrough

  1. The learner reproduces the seat setting and completes six minutes of staged warm-up.
  2. Power settles at 80 W and cadence averages 65 rpm without an early surge.
  3. At minutes 5, 10, 15 and 20, effort is 3, 4, 5 and 5 out of 10, with no pain or unusual breathlessness.
  4. The learner completes the full 20 minutes, reduces to 30 W and cools down for five minutes.
  5. The provider records work, cadence, heart rate trend and symptoms; no VO2 value is inferred because gas analysis was not used.

Result

The learner sustained the declared cycle task with controlled pacing. This does not establish VO2max, running endurance or a safe independent training dose.

7 · Practice

Turn the steps into a usable skill

First session

  1. Provider screens readiness and fits the cycle.
  2. Complete a staged easy warm-up while learning the target displays.
  3. Practise two short target-power intervals below the full duration.
  4. Complete one provider-selected steady bout if readiness remains good.
  5. Cool down and review output, cadence, effort, symptoms and recovery.

Repeat plan

The qualified exercise provider sets frequency, duration, intensity, interval structure and recovery. Change only one dose variable at a time and retest in the same mode; no universal endurance programme is supplied.

Progress when

  • The target power and cadence are held without early surges.
  • The same output is completed with stable or lower effort and no worse symptoms.
  • Recovery meets the provider's rule and any change exceeds test variability.

Do not progress when

  • The learner cannot maintain output without cadence swings or altered fit.
  • Effort or recovery worsens unexpectedly across comparable bouts.
  • Chest symptoms, dizziness, unusual breathlessness, pain, illness or heat stress appears.

8 · Check the result

Measure what changed

Time, distance or sustainable power in one declared exercise mode, with validated oxygen uptake only when directly measured

How: Reproduce equipment fit, calibration, power/cadence target, duration and environment; record output, effort, symptoms, assistance and physiological measures separately.

Good result: The declared task is completed within its output band on repeat sessions with acceptable symptoms and a change beyond test error.
