This lesson teaches desk-based ecological literacy without field authority. The supplied fictional Merehaven Commons packet: a 2019 map marks a reed margin at North Pond; a 2024 newsletter reports a 40% visitor-count increase across the Commons; a 2024 planning note says surface water at South Field lasted five days after rain rather than the earlier two; an undated photograph has no verifiable location; and a 1980 grazing extract concerns West Meadow. No source measures a current species population or links visitors to South Field water.
Source/place/scale/time table, system relationship map, claim-type columns, uncertainty/alternatives sheet and rights/interest screen.
A complete second fictional packet for delayed transfer: a 2021 East Bank bird list, a 2025 North Gate cycling-count note, a 2025 Meadow Path soil-compaction note, a dated photograph labelled only 'waterside' with no coordinates, and a lease extract assigning West Ditch maintenance. The transfer question asks only what each source establishes about place and time; it supplies no causal link among birds, cycling or compaction.

Follow these steps in order

4 · Worked example
See the whole method used once
Scenario
The Merehaven packet contains a visitor newsletter and a separate planning note about longer-lasting surface water; a headline claims visitors caused flooding and harmed reed species.
Walkthrough
The learner records that the map is five years old, the photo is undated and no source establishes a current species or exact shared location.
They map visitor activity and surface water as separate observations and classify the causal link and species harm as hypotheses, not records.
They list rainfall, drainage maintenance and photo location as competing explanations and identify landholders, local community and ecological expertise as absent.
They conclude only that two fictional records report more visitors and longer surface water at unspecified related times, then stop before cause, species or intervention.
Result
The learner produces a precise bounded ecological conclusion and an authority map. No real ecological fact or action is established.
