2 · Get ready

Gather what you need and check the starting conditions

What you need

  • A fictional need card: “Find three official contact numbers during a six-hour power and internet outage.”
  • Four option cards: handwritten paper, printed copy, offline password-protected note and ask-a-support-person/no independent copy.
  • A matrix for function, findability, accessibility, privacy, no-power use, update burden, failure and reversal.

Before you start

  • Keep the exercise seated and entirely fictional; do not switch utilities or create a real outage.
  • Write the exact essential function before naming objects.
  • Apply the hard exclusion screen before comparing convenience.

3 · The method

Follow these steps in order

  1. Name the function

    Write what must continue, for whom, for how long and what counts as enough.

    Why: Starting with an object encourages gadget-first thinking.

    Check: The function can be tested without using a hazardous system.

  2. Name the consequence of failure

    Describe the harmless exercise consequence and the real safe-stop boundary.

    Why: Failure severity determines how much evidence and authority an option needs.

    Check: The scenario remains low consequence and has an external-help route.

  3. Run the hard exclusion screen

    Reject medical, oxygen, electrical, fuel, heating, structural, food/water, rescue, weapon and legally regulated substitutions.

  4. List available alternatives

Scenario

A fictional household needs three public-service contact numbers during a six-hour power and internet outage, with one reader who uses large print.

Walkthrough

  1. The learner defines the function as “retrieve all three verified numbers within two minutes without power.”
  2. They reject any utility, electrical or communication-equipment modification and compare handwritten, printed, offline-note and support-person routes.
  3. The large-print printed card scores best for power independence and access but has a stale-copy risk; the learner adds a version date and locked storage location.
  4. In a tabletop phone-unavailable test, the reader finds all three numbers in 45 seconds, then schedules quarterly verification.

Result

A simple large-print card preserves one information function with visible privacy and stale-data limits. It proves no general survival or improvisation skill.
