This lesson teaches the complete supervised heat-acclimation pathway: define the real heat/work/PPE configuration, screen health and medicines, put engineering and work-rest controls first, collect a cool-condition baseline, follow the provider-set exposure, monitor strain and symptoms, recover, and retest after decay. It provides no self-directed heat dose.

Gather what you need and check the starting conditions

What you need

  • The accountable provider’s written heat plan and workplace/travel heat-risk assessment.
  • A calibrated environmental measurement or official heat index used by the responsible programme, plus the exact clothing/PPE and task.
  • Symptom card, work/rest log, provider-approved fluid plan, cooling area and emergency route.

Before you start

  • Give the provider relevant health history, recent illness, medicines, sleep, current acclimatisation, prior heat illness and access needs.
  • Record temperature, humidity, radiant heat, airflow, workload, clothing/PPE, shade, cooling, water, communication and supervision.
  • Agree the session duration, observation method, stop symptoms, emergency actions and who has authority to end exposure.

3 · The method

Follow these steps in order

  1. Define the exact heat task

    Name the work or travel task, environment, clothing and required function; do not use “tolerate heat” as the goal.

    Why: Heat strain depends on the whole configuration.

    Check: The plan records all four elements and the controls that remain mandatory.

  2. Screen readiness with the provider

    Report health, medicines, recent illness, sleep, hydration concerns and previous heat symptoms; accept defer or modification.

    Why: Risk can change before the thermometer changes.

    Check: The provider records clearance, modifications or no-start.

  3. Put controls before exposure

    Confirm shade/cooling, work-rest, water, communication, buddy/supervision and emergency access before beginning.

    Why: Acclimation is only one layer of prevention.

    Check: Every control is present and reachable; a missing control cancels the session.

  4. Capture a cool-condition baseline

    On a comparable task in a thermally comfortable setting, record task function, perceived effort, heart rate or other provider-selected measures and symptoms.

    Why: The baseline helps distinguish task difficulty from heat strain.

    Check: A dated supported comparator exists without manufacturing heat.

  5. Enter only the prescribed exposure

    Follow the provider-set environment, workload, duration and rest; do not add clothing, effort or time.

    Why: Unplanned dose changes invalidate the comparison and can increase risk.

    Check: Actual exposure matches the plan or the deviation is stopped and recorded.

  6. Monitor strain continuously

    At the provider-set intervals, report symptoms, effort, task quality and any physiological measure; the observer watches speech, gait, coordination and behaviour.

    Check: Every interval is recorded and escalation occurs on the first stop sign.

  7. Cool and recover

    Finish at the planned endpoint or earlier, move to the cooling area and follow the approved recovery and fluid plan; record recovery time and delayed symptoms.

  8. Compare repeated sessions

    The provider compares equivalent sessions for strain, symptoms and task function while retaining environmental controls.

4 · Worked example

See the whole method used once

Scenario

A new warehouse employee must work in a hot loading area while wearing required protective clothing; occupational health and the employer run the authorised acclimatisation programme.

Walkthrough

  1. The team records the task, measured environment, clothing, shade, cooling, work-rest schedule, water and emergency route, then captures a comfortable-area task baseline.
  2. Occupational health screens recent illness, medicines and prior heat history and clears a reduced initial workload.
  3. During the prescribed block, the employee reports effort and symptoms at each interval while a supervisor observes coordination; a mild headache triggers early stop and cooling.
  4. The provider records recovery, adapts the next session and states that a two-week absence requires reassessment rather than automatic return to the previous exposure.

Result

The worker used the control system and stop rule correctly. One early-stopped session is useful safety information, not failed toughness or proof of acclimation.

7 · Practice

Turn the steps into a usable skill

First session

  1. Review the measured configuration, controls, emergency route and stop card.
  2. Complete provider screening and the cool-condition task baseline.
  3. Enter only the authorised exposure and record each monitoring interval.
  4. Stop at the planned endpoint or first trigger and complete observed cooling/recovery.
  5. Review deviations, symptoms and next-session or no-return decision with the provider.

Repeat plan

Only the qualified provider sets exposure frequency, workload and progression. Compare equivalent sessions and document breaks; after illness, heat symptoms or the declared time away, re-screen before any return.

Progress when

  • Equivalent sessions show acceptable task function with no stop symptom and no worsening strain marker.
  • The learner reports symptoms promptly and uses controls without prompting.
  • Recovery is timely under the provider rule and the plan remains current for the actual environment.

Measure what changed

Strain, symptoms and safe function in a provider-defined heat configuration

How: Record measured environment, workload, clothing/PPE, controls, exposure and rest time, symptoms, task errors, provider-selected physiological measures, fluids, recovery and adverse events.

Good result: A good result is provider-defined matched-session improvement without stop symptoms, impaired function or removal of controls, plus successful recovery.

This does not prove: It does not prove immunity to heat illness, a universal safe dose, transfer to another climate/PPE/task or permanent adaptation.
