PWR-212 · SUPERVISED full tutorial

Perform one provider-selected robotic-assistance task with load limits, an exclusion zone and device-off comparison

A trained team evaluates a back-support device through an unloaded rehearsal and one empty-crate move between waist-high benches. The learner respects the exclusion zone, turns with the feet, identifies an assistance-timing mismatch and demonstrates stop and safe removal. This cannot establish greater strength, injury prevention or workplace readiness.

What you will produceUnder trained supervision, the learner completes an unloaded rehearsal and one approved light task, logs human–device error and demonstrates the stop and safe-removal procedure.

1 · Permission and limits

Know exactly what you may do

You may

  • Participant choice — Define the narrow task: The responsible ergonomics or clinical team states the empty crate, bench heights, one-metre route, device model/mode and prohibited movements.
  • Learner failure role — Respond to mismatch: If the device pushes at the wrong time, stop, set down, use the emergency cue and let staff disable/remove it.
  • Robotic strength augmentation outcome review may inspect “Supported task output, whole-body loading, discomfort, heat, balance, errors, discontinuation and device-off strength” under the configured comparator.

Qualified help is required for

  • Team-owned gate — Screen person and environment: The provider checks health, fit criteria, clothing, floor, overhead clearance, exclusion zone and rescue/removal plan.
  • Provider-controlled rehearsal — Record device-off baseline: Move the empty crate once without the powered/support mode, using the team’s ordinary handling plan; record time, discomfort, balance and movement.
  • Scheduling owner for Robotic strength augmentation: the responsible team. Repeat rule: The qualified team controls familiarisation, work–rest cycle, load and progression. Begin unloaded and with one empty-object transfer; repeat only after fit, symptom and task review.

Never do this from the page alone

  • Unsafe Robotic strength augmentation choice: Add weight to feel the benefit.
  • Second failure that ends progression: Brace against or outrun mistimed assistance.
  • Solo use is barred for Robotic strength augmentation. Trigger: Stop for mistimed assistance, unexpected motion, warning, noise, loose fastener, battery issue or failed release.

2 · Get ready

Gather what you need and check the starting conditions

What you need

  • Declared Robotic strength augmentation fixture: A back-support exoskeleton is evaluated in a controlled work simulation: move an empty crate from one waist-high bench to another one metre away. No floor lift or added load is permitted.
  • Setup aid for Screen person and environment: Prepare the empty crate, level route, exclusion zone, spotter and tested emergency release.
  • Robotic strength augmentation log: Supported task output, whole-body loading, discomfort, heat, balance, errors, discontinuation and device-off strength; retain Robotic strength augmentation errors, assistance, stop and fallback.
  • Strength-augmentation evidence sheet: from “Effects of 24-weeks in-field use of a back-supporting exoskeleton on biomechanics, work intensity and musculoskeletal discomfort”, record workplace tasks, device exposure, comparator, biomechanical and discomfort outcomes, and adverse events. Do not convert the study into a load prescription. Use the NIST Privacy Framework to limit collection of worker movement and discomfort data during the empty-crate simulation.

Before you start

  • Obtain device-specific training, task assessment and same-day clearance from the responsible team.
  • Prepare the empty crate, level route, exclusion zone, spotter and tested emergency release.
  • Start check for Robotic strength augmentation: No task parameter is left for the learner to increase.
  • Top-of-sheet stop for Robotic strength augmentation: Stop for pain, dizziness, loss of balance, skin pressure, numbness, breathlessness, heat stress or unusual fatigue.

3 · The method

Follow these steps in order

  1. Define the narrow task

The responsible ergonomics or clinical team states the empty crate, bench heights, one-metre route, device model/mode and prohibited movements.

Why: No task parameter is left for the learner to increase.

Check: No task parameter is left for the learner to increase.

  2. Screen person and environment

The provider checks health, fit criteria, clothing, floor, overhead clearance, exclusion zone and rescue/removal plan.

Why: The learner and spotter know the stop path.

Check: The learner and spotter know the stop path.

  3. Inspect and fit the device

Trained staff check fasteners, alignment, battery, heat, limits, emergency release and skin/contact areas.

Why: Fit is approved before activation.

Check: Fit is approved before activation; verify it in the back-support crate transfer.

  4. Record device-off baseline

Move the empty crate once without the powered/support mode, using the team’s ordinary handling plan; record time, discomfort, balance and movement.

Why: Comparator uses the same crate and route.

Check: Comparator uses the same crate and route.

  5. Rehearse without the crate

Practise stand, turn with feet, approach, pause and emergency stop while the device is unloaded.

Why: Learner can stop and remain balanced inside the zone.

Check: Learner can stop and remain balanced inside the zone.

  6. Perform one assisted transfer

At the provider-set mode, take the empty crate, walk one metre, place it fully and release before repositioning.

Why: No collision, jerk, limit warning or trapped hand occurs.

Check: No collision, jerk, limit warning or trapped hand occurs.

  7. Respond to mismatch

If the device pushes at the wrong time, stop, set down, use the emergency cue and let staff disable/remove it.

Why: The learner does not fight the device or continue carrying.

Check: The learner does not fight the device or continue carrying.

  8. Compare total outcome

Record task time, assistance, discomfort, heat, balance, errors, discontinuation and device-off ability; provider and learner decide next use.

Why: Reduced local muscle effort is not called injury prevention or human strength gain.

Check: Reduced local muscle effort is not called injury prevention or human strength gain.

4 · Worked example

See the whole method used once

Scenario

A back-support exoskeleton is evaluated in a controlled work simulation: move an empty crate from one waist-high bench to another one metre away. No floor lift or added load is permitted.

Walkthrough

  1. The team marks the one-metre route and confirms that only an empty crate may be moved.
  2. Trained staff fit the device, check heat, fasteners, release and skin, and explain the exclusion zone.
  3. The learner completes one device-off transfer, then rehearses approach, foot turn and stop without the crate.
  4. On the assisted trial, the learner moves the empty crate and places it fully on the second bench.
  5. During a staged timing mismatch without the crate, the learner stops and staff disable the device.
  6. The log compares time, balance, discomfort and heat; no weight is added and the team schedules review.

Result

One empty-crate transfer succeeds and the learner handles a staged mismatch. It does not prove greater human strength, injury prevention or workplace readiness.

5 · Right and wrong

7 · Practice

Turn the steps into a usable skill

First session

  1. Back-support work-simulation block: the ergonomics team records both bench heights, the one-metre level lane, empty crate, back-support model/mode, bystander exclusion line, spotter location and emergency-release owner. Floor lifting and added mass remain prohibited.
  2. Bench-and-route inspection: check clearance around both waist-high surfaces, crate handles, floor traction, clothing, contact pads, fasteners, battery or spring state, heat and the unobstructed set-down path.
  3. Device-off comparator: using the ordinary handling plan, move the empty crate bench-to-bench once. Log foot turn, time, balance, discomfort and any assistance; this row is not a test of maximum lifting strength.
  4. Unloaded timing rehearsal: without touching the crate, practise approach, hip/torso support onset, foot turn, pause and release. A mistimed push triggers stand-still, emergency cue and staff disablement before any loaded trial.
  5. Empty-crate transfer and mismatch close: complete one approved bench-height transfer, release the crate fully, then rehearse a mistimed-assistance response without the crate. Compare whole-body comfort, heat, balance and error with a trolley or task-redesign option before discussing further use.

Repeat plan

Any later occupational or clinical evaluation repeats the bench geometry, exclusion zone, device-off comparator, unloaded timing rehearsal and emergency-release check. Only the qualified team may change work–rest schedule, support mode or load; ordinary ergonomic controls such as trolley use or task redesign stay in the comparison.

Progress when

  • No task parameter is left for the learner to increase.
  • The learner and spotter know the stop path.
  • Fit is approved before activation.
  • Fit remains acceptable, stop/removal works, the task has no collision or limit breach, discomfort and heat remain acceptable, and supported benefit is not offset by balance or error cost.

Do not progress when

  • Do not continue while this error remains: Add weight to feel the benefit.
  • Pause until this correction works: Use a trained spotter at the named position.
  • This Robotic strength augmentation stop ends the block: Stop for pain, dizziness, loss of balance, skin pressure, numbness, breathlessness, heat stress or unusual fatigue.

8 · Check the result

Measure what changed

Supported task output, whole-body loading, discomfort, heat, balance, errors, discontinuation and device-off strength

How: Use an ergonomics sheet with separate rows for device-off bench transfer, unloaded actuator-timing rehearsal, assisted empty-crate transfer and staged mismatch. Record bench height, lane length, foot-turn strategy, time, spotter action, whole-body loading proxy selected by the professional, discomfort, heat, balance, collision, set-down and release. Compare the back-support system with trolley use or task redesign; do not convert supported output into device-off strength.

Good result: Fit remains acceptable, stop/removal works, the task has no collision or limit breach, discomfort and heat remain acceptable, and supported benefit is not offset by balance or error cost.

This does not prove: Boundary for Robotic strength augmentation: “Supported task output, whole-body loading, discomfort, heat, balance, errors, discontinuation and device-off strength” describes only A back-support exoskeleton is evaluated in a controlled work simulation: move an empty crate from one waist-high bench to another one metre away. No floor lift or added load is permitted. It cannot establish “An exoskeleton gives permanent super-strength”.
