This lesson teaches precision on a repeatable, low-force placement task. You will stabilise the work area, choose an accuracy target, move slowly, classify misses, correct the largest error and test a new layout. It is not a tremor test, diagnosis or rehabilitation programme.

2 · Get ready

Gather what you need and check the starting conditions

What you need

  • a repeatable trace, placement or aiming target.
  • A non-slip mat, stable chair/table, blunt plastic tweezers if comfortable and a tray that contains dropped objects.
  • A target sheet with centre and edge zones plus tally for centre, edge, miss, drop, excess force and fatigue.

Before you start

  • Prepare ten 15–25 mm beads or tokens placed by hand or safe blunt tweezers into ten printed target circles
  • Before the first fine motor precision attempt, write the exact result you will score: Error, quality, time, force and fatigue on a named manual product.
  • Use objects too large to swallow accidentally and keep them away from children or animals.
  • Choose hand support and tool size that allow a relaxed grip; set a five-minute maximum block.

3 · The method

Follow these steps in order

  1. Stabilise the work area

    Place the mat, tray and targets at comfortable reach. Rest the forearm or hand edge if that improves control without blocking movement.

    Why: A stable surface reduces avoidable object and body motion.

    Check: Nothing slides and all ten targets are reachable without leaning or shoulder lift.

  2. Set the accuracy rule

    Define centre as fully inside the inner circle, edge as touching it, miss as outside and drop as leaving the hand or tool.

    Why: Visible landing categories make placement feedback consistent across trials.

    Check: A second scorer would classify the same placement the same way.

  3. Use a light repeatable grip

    Pick up one token with the least pressure that holds it securely. Keep wrist and fingers in a comfortable middle range.

    Why: Excess pinch force adds fatigue without improving placement.

    Check: The token stays secure and the learner reports no whitening, shaking from effort or pain.

  4. Move over the target first

    Bring the token directly above the centre, pause, then lower it vertically. Release only after contact with the mat.

    Why: Separating travel from release reduces lateral drift and bounce.

    Check: The token is stationary at release and does not roll out of the target.

  5. Classify the error immediately

    Mark centre, edge, miss or drop before moving the token. Add left, right, short or long for each edge or miss.

    Why: Direction labels reveal a correctable pattern rather than one total score.

    Check: Every placement has a zone and directional label when needed.

  6. Correct one error pattern

    If three placements drift in one direction, change only target approach, support or release point and place three new tokens.

    Why: One-variable correction shows whether the change addresses the observed error.

  7. Rest before a second set

    Stop after ten placements, rate hand/arm fatigue 0–10 and rest two minutes. Continue only if fatigue and comfort return to baseline.

  8. Test a rotated layout

    Rotate the target sheet 90 degrees while keeping distance, tool and scoring rule fixed. Complete one final set.

4 · Worked example

See the whole method used once

Scenario

A learner places ten 20 mm wooden tokens into 30 mm circles using the preferred hand and a forearm rest.

Walkthrough

  1. They secure the sheet on a non-slip mat and confirm all targets are in reach.
  2. The first set yields six centre, three right-edge and one miss, with fatigue 2/10.
  3. Because three placements drift right, they pause directly over centre before lowering rather than changing grip force.
  4. Three correction tokens all land centre; after a two-minute rest, the second set yields nine centre and one edge.
  5. The rotated sheet yields eight centre with fatigue 2/10, so the result is reported as accuracy under both layouts.

Result

Centre placements improve after an approach correction without greater force or fatigue. The task does not diagnose dexterity or prove transfer to craft, work or clinical function.

7 · Practice

Turn the steps into a usable skill

First session

  1. Fix ten printed target circles to table & place ten 15–25 mm beads or tokens in a shallow tray. Decide whether fingers or blunt tweezers are used, then mark centre-zone, edge-zone, outside & drop so a second scorer can classify every placement.
  2. Check that shoulder stays relaxed & all targets are reachable. Pick up one token with lightest secure grip, move above target, stop hand & release only after token is stationary over circle.
  3. Place five tokens without correcting them after release. For each, record centre, edge, outside or drop & name whether endpoint error was overshoot, undershoot, left or right rather than simply calling it inaccurate.
  4. Choose most frequent endpoint error & move hand above two empty practice circles before releasing another token. Keep grip, target size & seating unchanged so correction tests endpoint control rather than a new task.
  5. Rest hand, then complete second five-token set. Stop if grip whitening, shaking from effort, numbness or pain appears; speed is recorded only as context & never used to excuse an off-target placement.
  6. Rotate printed target sheet ninety degrees & place a final matched set after rest. Compare centre-zone count, drops & directional errors; rotated layout checks precision without making bead smaller or requiring a hazardous tool.

Repeat plan

Practise on two later days with same token size & target diameter. One day repeats original sheet; next rotates or reorders circles. Reduce target size only after two ten-token trials each produce no drops & at least eight centre placements without rising hand symptoms.
