Gather what you need and check the starting conditions

What you need

  • a voice-professional-led projection task in an appropriate room.
  • Ten short phrases, a sound-level meter used as context rather than a target, and listener accuracy sheets.
  • Water, chair, room map, rest timer and amplification option.

Before you start

  • Prepare a voice-professional-led set of ten neutral phrases in an appropriate quiet room with marked listener positions
  • Before the first voice projection attempt, write the exact result you will score: Listener intelligibility at distance, calibrated level, effort/symptom report and acoustic measures in the declared room and amplification configuration.
  • The voice professional checks current voice status, ordinary speaking comfort, room acoustics and the need for amplification.
  • Set a comfortable baseline distance; do not compete with background noise.

3 · The method

Follow these steps in order

  1. Set the communication line

    Place one listener at the approved distance, remove competing noise and face the listener without forcing eye contact.

    Why: Projection depends on room and listener position, not voice effort alone.

    Check: The listener can see or access the message and the room stays at the approved noise level.

  2. Prepare one easy phrase

    Read the phrase silently, take an easy breath and mark one natural pause. Keep shoulders and jaw comfortable.

  3. Aim the message

  4. Use clear consonants

4 · Worked example

See the whole method used once

Scenario

A speech-language professional supervises ten neutral announcements to a trained listener at three metres in a quiet room, then at five metres with optional amplification.

Walkthrough

  1. The room is checked and the learner’s ordinary voice is symptom-free before starting.
  2. For “The blue folder is on table four,” the learner marks the natural pause and aims the first consonant toward the listener.
  3. At three metres the listener gets five of five phrases and effort stays 2/10.
  4. At five metres two endings are missed and effort rises to 4/10, so the professional adds the room microphone rather than asking for more force.
  5. With amplification the listener gets five of five and effort returns to 2/10; the session ends after the planned rest.

Result

Intelligibility improves through articulation and amplification without a symptom increase. The result belongs to this room, distance and setup.

7 · Practice

Turn the steps into a usable skill

First session

  1. Voice professional marks a near & far listening position in a quiet room, selects ten neutral phrases & confirms learner's comfortable speaking level. Record room noise, distance, current throat symptoms & perceived effort before any projection cue is used.
  2. At near mark, say one easy phrase conversationally while aiming message toward listener. Listener writes words heard; learner reports throat, neck & breathing effort without trying to produce a particular loudness number.
  3. Practise message direction & crisp initial consonants on three phrases. Professional listens for squeeze, breath holding or pitch drift & permits only one cue at a time; a louder but less intelligible repetition is scored as a failed adjustment.
  4. Move listener to far mark without changing phrase list. Deliver five phrases, leaving a full recovery breath & pause between them. Compare listener word accuracy with effort rather than judging voice as powerful, weak, good or bad.
  5. If one phrase is missed, identify whether direction, consonant clarity, pace or room masking is likelier cause. Repeat that phrase once with approved correction, then take scheduled quiet rest instead of drilling through fatigue.
  6. Finish with remaining phrases at both distances & a neutral conversational cool-down. Session record keeps each listener response, distance, cue, symptom & effort rating; no target is progressed after roughness, pain or loss of easy speech.
