Use a fitted prosthesis in a controlled task while checking skin, control and ownership separately
Prosthetic embodiment can include ownership, agency and perceived location, but none is required for useful prosthesis use. Kai’s prosthetic team checks residual-limb skin, fit and terminal-hand calibration. Kai then maps where the hand feels located, moves a foam cube, and rates command agency, ownership, comfort and usefulness separately. Neutral questions preserve low or mixed ratings instead of coaching a natural-limb claim.

Move the foam cube along the guarded 30 cm path with the minimum reliable grip and log slips, collisions and assistance.

2 · Get ready
Gather what you need and check the starting conditions
What you need
The individually fitted prosthesis and approved liner/socket/components.
A mirror or visual feedback setup selected by the team.
One light, non-breakable practice object and stable work surface.
Skin-check aid and record for device state, task, control errors, embodiment ratings and burden.
Before you start
The prosthetist confirms fit, component integrity, battery/connection and permitted wear time.
Inspect residual limb and contact areas using a mirror or helper.
Do not use a damaged, misfitting, uncharged or wet device outside its rating.
Agree stops for pain, pressure, skin change, electrical sensation, fall risk or device fault.
3 · The method
Follow these steps in order
Inspect before donning
Check skin, liner, socket and component surfaces using the team-approved sequence; mark any redness or wound.
Why: Skin condition and fit can change from one session to the next.
Check: No unapproved skin issue or damaged component is present.
Don with the trained sequence
Apply liner/socket and secure components exactly as fitted; do not add padding or alter alignment.
Why: Small fit changes affect control, pressure and safety.

Calibrate control
Run prosthetist-approved opening/closing or signal calibration in the supported position.

With chosen visual or sensory feedback, point to the terminal hand and rehearse approaching foam cube without grasping.

Contact and grasp lightly
Use prosthetist-set command to contact and hold the foam cube with the minimum reliable force.

Report agency (“I caused it”), ownership (“felt like mine”), location and comfort separately on the agreed scale.
Why: These experiences can differ and should not be forced into one embodiment score.

Remove and inspect
End at the prescribed wear time, doff with the trained sequence and recheck skin after the prosthetist-set interval.
Why: Pressure effects may appear after removal.
Check: Skin and symptoms meet the prosthetic-team continuation rule.
Mark perceived location before the grasp
With the terminal hand supported and eyes closed only if Kai and the prosthetic team approve, ask Kai to point on a large body-map sheet to the felt location of the terminal hand. Then uncover the terminal hand and mark the physical terminal-hand location in a second colour.
Why: A location mismatch is useful fitting or feedback information and is not the same as weak agency or ownership.
Check: Felt and physical marks are preserved separately with posture, vision condition and prosthesis configuration.
Probe agency without demanding ownership
After the foam-cube transfer, ask two neutral questions in random order: “How much did you feel you caused that movement?” and “How much did the terminal hand feel like part of you?” Record each answer before discussion.
Why: A wearer may command the terminal hand reliably without experiencing it as owned, or may report familiarity without precise control.
Check: Agency and ownership retain separate scale values and the occupational therapist does not suggest the preferred direction.
4 · Worked example
See the whole method used once
Scenario
A prosthetist and occupational therapist support Kai using a myoelectric hand to move a foam block 30 cm.
Walkthrough
Kai inspects residual-limb skin while the prosthetic team checks socket, alignment and battery.
He dons at the alignment marks and calibrates open/close signals while seated.
He approaches, grasps foam cube lightly and releases it in the target under guarding.
He rates agency high, ownership neutral and comfort acceptable instead of being coached to feel ownership.
After the prescribed wear interval he doffs the prosthesis and Kai's prosthetic team checks skin.
Before the transfer, Kai marks felt terminal-hand location slightly nearer the body than the visible hand; the occupational therapist retains both marks rather than moving Kai’s answer.
After release, Kai rates agency 8/10, ownership 3/10 and usefulness 7/10, demonstrating that reliable command, body ownership and practical value are different observations.
Result
Kai demonstrates controlled device use and reports embodiment dimensions honestly. Utility does not depend on claiming terminal hand feels fully biological. Kai’s profile documents a stable command experience and a modest ownership feeling; it does not collapse those dimensions into prosthetic-control success.

7 · Practice
Turn the steps into a usable skill
First session
The prosthetist inspects Kai’s residual-limb skin, socket, liner, alignment and battery, then confirms the permitted wear interval.
Kai dons at the alignment marks, calibrates open and close while seated and performs three empty approach–release rehearsals.
Before object handling, Kai marks the felt terminal-hand location on a body map; the occupational therapist overlays physical location in a second colour.
Kai moves the foam cube 30 cm into the blue square with minimum reliable grip while slips, collisions and assistance are logged.
Kai rates agency, ownership, location confidence, comfort and usefulness separately, then doffs and completes the timed skin recheck.
Repeat plan
At the next prosthetic-team appointment, repeat the same socket, alignment, seated posture, foam cube, 30 cm path and vision condition. Compare body-map displacement and the five separate ratings only after skin remains acceptable; any component, fit or feedback change starts a new profile.
Progress when
Object-control errors fall without increasing grip force or burden.
Skin remains within the prosthetic team’s skin criteria.
The terminal hand supports a chosen daily task, regardless of ownership rating.

Measure what changed

How: Record device/configuration, successful moves, slips/collisions, assistance, wear time, skin response and separate agency, ownership, location, comfort and usefulness ratings. Add the two-colour body-map displacement, vision condition and neutral agency, ownership, location-confidence and usefulness ratings to foam-cube transfer and skin record.
Good result: Kai's prosthetic team confirms repeatable safe control on the declared task, acceptable skin and Kai’s chosen value; high ownership is not required.
