## Before you begin
- [ ] I read the tutorial authority and stop conditions.
- [ ] I have the required equipment/space or a declared accessible alternative.

## Canonical source context

Interoception covers signals arising within the body, but objective task accuracy, self-reported sensibility and confidence are different. Heartbeat counting is not used because expectation can dominate the score. Instead, this lesson takes one naturally present, low-intensity signal, describes it without diagnosis, lists alternative interpretations, chooses one ordinary low-risk response and checks later whether that interpretation was useful.

Target outcome: The learner completes six signal–interpretation–action–later-check records and shows whether confidence tracks the usefulness of the chosen interpretation.

### Authority and setup conditions

- Choose a signal that is already mild, familiar and safe to notice; do not choose chest pain, faintness, severe breathlessness, hunger/fullness when clinically unsafe, or escalating distress.
- Set a maximum 30-second notice period and one later check time.
- Keep prescribed care, food, hydration, medication and symptom plans unchanged.

### Required or supplied materials

- A record with raw signal, possible meanings, confidence, chosen action, later function and alternative explanation.
- A timer for a brief 30-second notice period and a later reminder.
- Normal aids and the option to use an external cue or stop body focus.

## 1. Name a low-risk moment

Choose one ordinary situation, such as working at a desk, and one naturally present signal. Do not create or intensify it.

Why: A declared moment prevents continuous scanning and symptom manufacture.

Success check: The log names situation, time and one signal only.

Accessible alternative: A supported, seated, reduced-range or slower version of “Choose one ordinary situation, such as working at a desk, and one naturally present signal. Do not create or intensify it.” is equivalent only when it keeps the same trained or measured target, declared configuration and success check: “The log names situation, time and one signal only.” If any of those change, record it as a related alternative rather than an equivalent repetition.

Alternative relationship: Conditional equivalence requires target and configuration check

## 2. Describe raw features

For up to 30 seconds, write location, pressure or movement quality, intensity from 0 to 5 and change over that short period. Avoid diagnostic labels.

Why: Raw description keeps perception separate from explanation.

Success check: The description uses sensory words and contains no disease conclusion.

Accessible alternative: Complete the same research action — “For up to 30 seconds, write location, pressure or movement quality, intensity from 0 to 5 and change over that short period. Avoid diagnostic labels.” — using speech-to-text, text-to-speech, enlarged text, keyboard-only navigation, shorter work blocks or a support person. Preserve this declared check: “The description uses sensory words and contains no disease conclusion.” Do not convert the research task into capability practice.

Alternative relationship: Target preserving when declared check is preserved

## 3. Generate alternatives

List at least two plausible interpretations, including an ordinary one and “not enough information.”

Why: One body signal can have multiple causes; alternatives reduce premature certainty.

Success check: Two distinct interpretations and an unknown option are present.

Accessible alternative: Complete “List at least two plausible interpretations, including an ordinary one and “not enough information.”” in shorter passes, or use keyboard input, dictation or a support person, while preserving this success check: “Two distinct interpretations and an unknown option are present.” Use pictorial body maps, colour-free symbol scales or spoken recording.

Alternative relationship: Target preserving when declared check is preserved

## 4. Rate and choose

Give each interpretation a confidence range, then choose no action or one reversible ordinary action that is acceptable under all plausible meanings.

Why: A range shows uncertainty, while a low-risk action avoids betting on an unverified diagnosis.

Success check: The action is small, reversible and does not alter treatment.

Accessible alternative: Complete “Give each interpretation a confidence range, then choose no action or one reversible ordinary action that is acceptable under all plausible meanings.” in shorter passes, or use keyboard input, dictation or a support person, while preserving this success check: “The action is small, reversible and does not alter treatment.” Choose an external-functional check rather than prolonged inward attention when body focus is distressing.

Alternative relationship: Target preserving when declared check is preserved

## 5. Check function later

At the planned time, record the signal again and one functional result, such as ability to continue comfortably or need for the normal break. Do not call change proof of a cause.

Why: A later observation tests usefulness better than confidence alone.

Success check: The record has a timed outcome and preserves alternative explanations.

Accessible alternative: Complete the same research action — “At the planned time, record the signal again and one functional result, such as ability to continue comfortably or need for the normal break. Do not call change proof of a cause.” — using speech-to-text, text-to-speech, enlarged text, keyboard-only navigation, shorter work blocks or a support person. Preserve this declared check: “The record has a timed outcome and preserves alternative explanations.” Do not convert the research task into capability practice.

Alternative relationship: Target preserving when declared check is preserved

## 6. Calibrate across records

After six records, sort confidence into low, medium and high and compare how often the chosen interpretation led to a useful action in each band.

Why: Calibration asks whether stronger confidence is more often useful, not whether every sensation is identified.

Success check: The summary shows counts by confidence band and does not hide misses.

Accessible alternative: Complete the same research action — “After six records, sort confidence into low, medium and high and compare how often the chosen interpretation led to a useful action in each band.” — using speech-to-text, text-to-speech, enlarged text, keyboard-only navigation, shorter work blocks or a support person. Preserve this declared check: “The summary shows counts by confidence band and does not hide misses.” Do not convert the research task into capability practice.

Alternative relationship: Target preserving when declared check is preserved
